What about a spinal block? I remember someone telling me about something they do to block the pain receptors in the spinal region. It's not an opiate based drug.
Hi papa, welcome to our world! At the same time, I'm sorry you have to be here. If you don't mind me asking...40mg of what? everyone here (as I'm sure you've seen from reading or posts) has their own personal demons, alot of us started off with legitimate pain, some not. but we've all ended up in the same boat. Yes, your doctor may have prescribed the Rx in the beginning, but we're all resonsible for where we are today. Please don't take that as a slam...I just mean that I believe the most important step in my recovery has been admitting I put me here, regardless of how it started.
We're all here to listen and support. It's just up to us as individuals to stay on the road to recovery. It's long, hard and even a little scary knowing you have to find another way to deal with the pain. I know in my situation (Tramadol addict - Huge!), that 6 years ago my joints started to deteriorate and I had 5 surgeries in about 3 years, and a radical hysterectomy to top it off! I was on and off of narc's for a few years and finally asked the doc for a non-narcotic pain med vs. the narc's...so entered tramadol! He he he, non-narc my ***! I took it for a year with no trouble, and started back on it about a year ago because my foraminal stemnosis has gotten worse, and this time around I didn't get so lucky! I started taking more than was prescribed and when I found it online, I went over the edge big time! I couldn't get enough. Like I said, I am an extreme case of low self-control I guess, and am now, at 41, trying to regain some resemblance of a life worth living! We all are.
I look forward to getting to know you here in the forum!
Take care of you, no one else can!

sorry they wanted to put in a spinal cord situlator it's a in the body tens unit but the leads ar close to the spinal cord and it's surgially impanted under the skin or a morphine pump it to is implanted in the body
papa with your back the way it is and the surgery being high risk, basically the only way for them to treat you is with the meds. I think even epidural shots probably dont help huh? I feel bad for you because your back problems probably cause alot of depression too. I really dont know what to say but keep on trying maybe one day they can do something for you, best of luck.
you got it, honey...
please come back when ya feel like yakkin.. :-)

what do you want to do now, bud? have you tried other methods of pain management before? chiro, acupuncture,TNS, nerve block-meds(neurontin, Cymbalta, etc.)
if you want off of the meds you are on now, is there a new pain managmenet specialist maybe you could go see?
well have to go this much typing is causing a spasm in my back be back mj thanks for the words
peace and prayers to all
I agree with allaboutmary - can you try to stop the pain pills for a few weeks to re-evaluate your pain? I have severe RA throughout my body and know from experience that Vicodin was making my pain worse. After detoxing off the pain meds (was using for 8 months) I found that an increase in Celebrex and Advil helped me more than the pain pills. Now, with the weather changes, I spend the evening w/hot & cold, hot & cold, etc. It's not as much fun as 'flying on Vicodin', but I am sober for 5 days now and feel the world is a great place to live in.
dang your making me crazy!!! your so evasive. When you asked to get off the meds....What did they say........help me out here. You will be helping others too to understand patient doctor madness.
Nauty...............
thats is just it i told them that they were'nt working and the only other soulation was more meds yes i understand i started this and have asked more than once for other soluations gotten some but no help and now when I asked to get off the meds because they don't work the answer was well lets say it was'nt what i wanted to here.
i was also totally clueless untill it was to late......
papabear, i understand. i have disk problems too, and surgery is not necessarily the way to go. everyone i know gives me advice, but they haven't seen the 8+ doctors i have, nor do they know there is no "magic bullet" to fix this kind of pain..
all you can do now is take the situation at hand, and get control of it. whether that is having someone help you monitor your med intake, or asking for help to get off the stuff.
i know many of us here would be happy to help in any way we can...
good luck buddy. i know, it's not easy.. none of it is...
warmly,
mj
I beg to differ. I had no clue that the drugs were addictive.......call me stupid. My doctor told me nothing just keeps on refilling. I took them for 8 years before I found out they were actually synthetic heroin. My thought was the doc prescribed them for me so Its ok. No problem. Boy did i find out for myself. I know I am not alone in this.
Nauty..............
Have you ever tried to stop them for a few weeks and re-evaluate your pain? I only know from my experience that they were making my pain worse. I have 3 bad disc's in my back and 2 bad hips. After detoxing off the pain meds (was using for 5 yrs) I found that advil helped me more than the pain pills. Can't say this would be your case, but maybe worth a try. You can always go back to the pain pills. So sorry your hurting, hang in there. Mary
40mg of oxycontin? i was doing 3 80's a day or more sometimes(90 of those prescribed) i had a really bad car wreck messed up my back(spinal fusion surgery etc)i got pissed at my dr too but i had to realize i was the one asking for the pills he didnt twist my arm but i know how u feel most definately.....when u say jump thru hoops do u mean drug tests, shots in the back, more and more meds, etc? sounds like your very mad but that may be a good thing u have to get mad at this addiction sometimes to get thru it...if u can understand that...but im just weird..what worked for me may not work for u....sounds like your in bad shape and probably do need pain meds...is there anyone that can hold your meds for u so u wont overdo it? im assumming that u r atking more than u should(remember just assuming)......hang in ther buddy....
yes it should be but the main ones that are causing the problem are pushing into the spinal canal and the operation is a extremely high risk "" I (the doc) can tell you that you will have some parallelizes but to what extent I'm not sure I will only operate if you lose control of your bodily functions) and yes I have had 2nd and 3trd opinions
what do you mean they make you jump through hoops???? any surgical options????
nauty............
did the doctors twist your arm to take the meds? did you ask them to help you get out of pain? why is it when everyone gfoes to these doctors asking for help and when they get it and then get addicted the first thing you want to do is blame the doctor? Everyone of us knows that pain meds are addictive everyone, the doctors even tell us so own up to your own mistakes. tell yor doc or some addiction type of doc your problem and the majority of the time they will help you. I understand youneed the pain relief because I too suffer from chronic back pain. I have had 3 surgeries in the past 2 years and I was told what the meds would do but I still wanted them. When I asked my doc for help I got it. Talk to your doctor and I truly hope you get the help you need and I hopeb and pray for you that everything works out for you.
oh not much 40 mg a day for the past 5 years with a peak at 100 for a few months all prescribed by the helpful doctors just really po'd right now tried of hurting and tried of the way the meds make me feel
What do you mean they make you jump through hoops??? 14 disc's.....wow. have you had any kind of surgery?? I've never heard of that. Your spine should be in a metal cage for that condition.......what are your options.??
Nauty.....................
i dont think u need to be uthenized......yet....lol......what and how much r u taking?
