Is it the Tylenol in it that's worse for your body than Hydrocodone?

Doctor - is it true that the hydrocodone stays in your bone marrow - another patient posted that.  What are the long-term effects on your body, not of the acetominophen part, but just the long-term effect of hydrocodone itself?  The thing is that the hydrocodone has actually helped me a lot with depression.  When taking it, I am much more productive, I concentrate better, and I get more tasks finished.  I don't want to be emotionally dependent on any drug since I'd rather depend on God, but I am curious - is hydrocodone really that bad for your health?  I was under the impression that the damaging part of Vicodin is the Tylenol in it, which harms your liver, but that the hydrocodone part is not permanently damaging to your body. (except that you can become addicted if you take it every day)

Thank you.. My doctor prescribed two 5-325 hydrocodone a day for me, as I have severe neuropathic pain all day and night.  This morning I took one 500 tylenol and was wondering which is worse for me to take.. the hydrocodone or the tylenol.  I think you answered it.

If it made you laugh then it was worth him getting under my skin! I'll admit I've said things on the women's and maternal forum that justified someone snapping at me, but not this time!! He's just so darn abrasive!! I'm glad it put a smile on your face, though...sounds like you're doing okay. Good for you!

Wow.  Shock and amazed.
You can actually quote from your med school book.

Please let me have your office address when you go into your own practice.

I want to address the original question by Tita67 because it is a very important one.  I happen to be a doctor who is trained in addiction medicine and also a doctor who unfotunaely learned most of what I know first hand.  That doesn't make me better or worse or even an expert.  I just want you to know where my opinion is coming from.  First of all, as several others have very correctly pointed out, the acetominophen in Vicodin is very toxic to the liver when takien in large doses or for a prolonged period.  I have seen many develop liver necrosis from too much acetominophen.  How much depends freatly on the size of the person and how much is taken at one time.  In other words it varies.

My opinion regarding the long term effect of hydrocodone is that most people will show no ill effects from taking hydrocodone after they stop. There does not appear to be any loss in brain function, liver function or kidney function.  It is much safer to take long term than alcohol for certain.  Does it produce a learning deficit like some drugs have been shown to do?  It has not been shown to have that effect at this point.  But that is obviously a very difficult parameter to measure accurately.  Bottom line there is no evidence that taking hydrocodone will create toxic effects on the body.

It is interesting that you mention that you are better able to concentrate and feel that you have improved function when taking Vicodin or hydrocodone.  That is probably the most addictive effect of hydrocodone.  The stimulating effect it has in spite of being classified a neuro depressant.  It is also why it is the drug of choice for many doctors and nurses.  The surge it creates.  Make no mistake, hydrocodone is the most addictive opiate on the market, for that very reason.  It amazes me that it has not been made a class 2 narcotic because of it's highly addictive nature.  I hope that answers your question.  Please be careful using this medication.  I can tell you from my own experience it gets you before you realixe it and it is hard as heck to get off of.  Far better to never start, believe me.

I really think you should settle down.  First of all, YOU ARE NOT A DOCTOR.  YOU ARE A MED STUDENT.  And I can tell you right now, if you continue with your ignorant advice and lack of personal experience, YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT PASSED MED SHCOOL.

Sobriety sounds like a med student who will get his or hers rear end kicked by the attendings and nurses with an attitude like that during residency.

is Tita67 the same poster who, under another name, asked questions about vicodin the other day?

as for sobriety - you say you're pre-med?  aren't you a little busy to be playing doctor on a forum such as this?  maybe you're on winter break.  i agree with mslkpage - bedside manner could use a little brush-up :)

Oh, and I mispoke when I said it was "similar" to an opiate. It is an opiate...I was thinking 'opium.'

My bad. At least I'm not on here screaming at people. You're gonna cause way more relapses then you are steps forward with that bedside manner of yours, you big jerk.

DO YOU EVEN REALIZE THAT THE ADVICE YOU ARE GIVING IS TOTALLY INCORRECT? TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION -YES IT IS THE ACETEM.(TYLENOL) THAT CAUSES HEPATIC TOXICITY. YOU CAN TAKE MAX OF 2000 MG IN 24 HR PERRIOD. THOSE NARCOTIC ANALGEISICS HAVE AROUND 325MG-650MG DEPENDING ON PILL IE: LORCET (10)/(650) 10MG HYDROCODONE NOT CODEINE AT ALL!!!! 650MG TYLENOL  VICOIN 5/500, PERCOCET 5/325,(OXYCODONE HCL) LORTAB 5/500,7.5/750,NORCO 10/325
(HYDROCODONE). AND TO MLKSPAGE YES THESE ARE ALLLLLL OPIATES-NO MAYBE...
HOWEVER THIS IS FROM MED STUDENT- BE CAUTIOUS OF TYLENOL LEVEL AND W/ THESE ESPECIALLY DEPENDENCE... BEST OF LUCK TO YOU...

WHY ARE YOU YELLING, YOU FREAKING IDIOT???

I didn't say it was NOT the tylenol that's dangerous- it is. I told the OP that this is not a doctor moderated forum (notice she posted her question to "doctor"?) And I pointed out that codeine is structurally similar to opiates.

Settle the f*ck down and actually read what I posted.

Pop a benzo while you're at it, sheesh.

(this is not a doctor moderated forum- you would have to post your question on the family practice forum to get a doctor's opinion.)

You do realize that the codeine in Hydrocodone is structurally similar to opiates, right?
