how to get off morphine

I have been on morphine since 2007 for severe back pain. I would like to stop, I do not want to go down the "methadone" route I want to do it my self, should I just take less and less each week? I wantto see if I can manage the pain in other ways. I hate the feeling taking drugs has, how any one can think morphine is "cool" is crazy, Any sugestions would be welcome

im coming of heroin and wud like to no wil morhine help if reduced weekly as i dont like subatex or methadone

If you taper yourself off that might help avoid withdrawals... just don't stop too much too quickly.... and always let your doctor know incase you have problems.... good luck. I have been on morphine for a couple of years but it seems to work well with no side effects.. If you need someone to talk to I am here for ya!

Well you could try tapering.  Usually addicts don't do well with tapering as we don't have the discipline obviously.  If you try that route, I would do it with your doctor's help (if you get the Morphine from a doctor), and/or have somebody else hold your pills for you while you taper.  Unfortunately we are not allowed to post or recommend tapering schedules on here.  
There are many otc meds that can help during withdrawal and they are in the Thomas Recipe and Amino Acid Protocol to the right of this page under the Health Pages.  Congrats for wanting to get off this stuff and manage your pain in other ways.  If you read through a lot of the posts on here, you'll find that a lot of people once off these meds, find their pain to be a lot less.  I also do.  It's amazing how well Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and other non-narcotic pain relieving methods actually do work :)  I would start with talking to your doctor.  Good luck to you and keep us posted on how everything goes!
