mental addiction

I've seen in some posts comments about flushing pills instead of hanging on to them "just in case" you need them to prove you're not addicted or not taking them places incase you "need" them.  I have some pain medication that I take everywhere with me, camping, overnight trips, pretty much where I go they go because I've been caught in the middle of the desert or on road trips with esophageal spasms or bursting ovarian cysts that have landed me in the ER.  Would that be considered a type of psychological addiction?

If not, what would be an example of a psychological addiction to pain medication?

sounds to me like you do not have an addiction..Given your medical issues..I understand just "incase"..If you don't take them regularly and you experience no w/ds..etc, I wouldn't consider you to have a mental or physical addiction..And that is good. You just want to be prepared because it sounds like you have been caught without help before..Just be careful and stick to only taking them when you need them..I see no reason for you to flush them since you are not an addict..take care..

I don't take them regularly.  If I leave town for an extended period of time and forget to pack them I do worry "what if" I have an episode.  I have OCD and anxiety too so naturally that doesn't help.  Normally if that happens my trips goes on without any problems and I still have a good time and then I feel silly that I even worried about it.  BUT having been in situations where I desperately needed medication with the closest hospital  80+ miles away I try to plan ahead.

I've never been addicted to anything before

In and of itself - not necessarily. If you've never been addicted to something and you were doing that there's nothing to worry about. If you've been addicted to something and were doing that - possibly.

For a classic, extreme example of psychological addiction - scroll down the page to the thread called "Does anyone else think it was worth it?" (don't think the original poster would mind) and read the post.
