Signs of abuse would be taking more medication at one time than prescribed; taking more medication each day than prescribed; obsessive thoughts about the medication and seeking more medication (doctor shopping, lies to doctors).  Meridia does not have anywhere near the abuse potential of narcotics, but in a person with a history of drug addiction it poses some risk.

Meridia is a schedule IV controlled medication with some potential for abuse.  Patients with a drug abuse history must be closely monitored when taking Meridia to ensure they do not abuse the drug. Meridia works by raising the levels of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain through a mechanism whereby it blocks the reuptake of those chemicals.  It also increases the level of dopamine in the brain.

Joanne,
I have tried Meridia it did work as far as no hunger.  I felt no high from it at all. I dont know if that helps you with your question. I know that the cost of the drug outweighed (no pun intended) the benefit.
Sincerely,
Shelly
