Hi there. This is an awful situation to be in. I hear your concerns but when considering what is best for the child in relation to your predicament, a closely monitered, regular, dose of methadone is the better option for your unborn baby.

While the baby may experience withdrawals when born, this is not certain. Babies have been born to methadone addicted mothers and suffered little if any withdrawals. In any case a withdrawing baby is always preferable to a withdrawing fetus. I dont know about your paticular situation but i remember that the supply of illicit narcotics is eratic, expensive and illegal. You are not a bad mother for going down the methadone route. Methadone, in your situation is the responsible thing to do. Remaining on an illicit narcotic is not.

Once the child is born, doctors will moniter the baby for any signs of distress and administer medications as required, Studies have shown that methadone is safe (when used under the supervision of experienced medical proffesionals) for the fetus and there are no longterm negative side effects. Provided you do as you are told by the doctors and not deviate from their plans i honestly believe you and your baby will be fine.

All the best. Regards Jeremy.

HI Stephanie....first off take a deep breath you are going to be fine and so is your baby
its not safe to detox during pregnancy so going from sub off the street to a legitimate prescription for methadone will be a good thing...#1 your supply wont run out witch could be devastating 2 methadone is considered safe wile pregnant ...the only draw back is having to go to a clinic everyday to get it...its more of a bother then anything else...as for your baby
im personal friends with a neo/natal nurse that brings babys off heroin methadone oxy ext
as long as they know your dose when you go into labor they will be able to ween the baby off safely...Jenny dose it all the time and the babys are fine....I even used the same formula they use to do the babys to get off methadone myself....I figured if it was safe enough for a baby it would be safe enough for me...and it was it worked out really well for the most part....just be up front and honest with everyone it will all work out there are nurses like Jen at every hospital for things like this ...today with the prescription drug epidemic it not even uncommon any more...I wish you and your baby the best of luck
my advise for you is to keep your dose as low as possible around 20 or 30 mg should do it for you...also stay on it for as short of time as possible the withdrawals are no fun but if you lissen to my advise you can at least minumize them...good luck and God bless....Gnarly

I'm afraid you'd have an addicted baby, and, from first hand experience, the withdrawels are the toughest out there, way tougher than heroin or vicodin.
