pain meds

i had a question where is everyone getting their pain meds?  doctors in my area totally refuse to write a script.  and if they do they give you very little.  someone i know that is in the health field said the doctors dont write them that much because most of them use them.  i have inherinted migraines i get every month . i have tried imitrax and midrin everything.  and the only thing that works in darvocet and vicodin.  which i very rarely get them so i have to suffer alot with headaches.  now they are trying me on zomig.  but the only thing unfortunetly is the pain meds.  i can see how you can get hooked on them they do make you feel good and want to clean the whole house.  just wanting to know how people get these for up to 10yrs and taking them every day when doctors wont perscribe them

Dr. Steve, MD.  What kind of test would show codiene use?  Urine or blood and how long would i need to be totally clean or at least at normal dosage, before going in for tests. This is not a work related question, so don't worry.  I would like to know what vicoden es is doing to my body.  2.5 es every four hours or so.  I know that i take waaayyyy to much, as i feel my body is suffering.  I would like to go in for a full physical and have a my pap smear,etc...done, but i want to be clean for it.  How long do I need to be clean before which test is to be done?  I often wonder how people stay on these things for years on end. And what doctor would prescribe for more than a year or so. I think it's killing me.  Thanks for any help.  Anyone Help. Neena

Jacque,
go to this site and find a pain rep in your area.
They will give you the names of compassionate doctors who will treat migraines with pain meds if needed.
If your headaches are being taken care of by Darvocet, then you really do not need an opiod as darvocette is about as strong as tylenol aspirn.

I know for me to take a urine test for probation, it takes at least 72 hours minimum. But that would depend on how much you are taking.

How much were you taking?  I am taking bout 2.5 vicks es every 3-4 hours depending on what's going on.  72 hours?  Is that about what you were taking?  Is it only the urine test that reveals it?  Thanks for help, Ken. PLease Reply, Neen

Neena,
In a normal physical, there are no tests to detect narcotics like codiene or vicodin. Pre-employment and, of course, parole or probation dept tests would look for the metabolites of opiates in your urine. But your family MD won't be testing for those things unless you ask him to. 2.5 Vic ES per 4 hrs? Relax. Narcotics in themselves rarely cause direct damage to the body. As drugs go, they're pretty benign (harmless). What you have to watch out for is the Tylenol in the Vicodin. You're taking basically, 2.5 extra stength Tylenols every 4 hrs. That's about the upper limit of what someone should be taking over a long term. One big warning for you: NEVER combine alcohol with Tylenol. People have died from mixing a few beers with a couple Tylenol! You should be staying away from the booze anyway with migraines. By in large, docs don't like to dispense a lot of narcotics for headache patients. There's a trust issue there, plus, if you really do have classic migraines, the imitrex and other drugs like it should relieve your pain. If they don't, that pretty much tells the doc you don't have true migraines. If they persist, you'll be in for some expensive brain scans and the like. Have you had an MRI? Headaches can be phsycologically motivated, too, and that makes DR's even less willing to put you on addictive drugs like the good ole Vics. I got terrible headaches that weren't migraines for years until I changed professions and started writing for a living, something I love. That "cured' my "migraines." You might take a good look at your life in general. Headaches can be caused by depression and, in turn, perpetuate the depression, creating a neverending cycle. Add addiction to that picture and you'll really be a mess! See a specialist like Dr Steve suggested. Don't go on suffering.

I feel the need to preface my reply by saying this is not meant as a criticism of your previous message. I always find your advice to be very helpful. But...
Can someone really die from beers and a few Tylenol? Or might there be a pre-disposing condition that is being exacerbated by the acetaminophen and alcohol? In my day, I used to take quite a few Vics or Tylenol with codeine...and I would drink, too. And all my addict/recovering addict friends did the same thing. We never had a problem (other than the obvious addiction). There's been a bit of hype in the press lately about acetaminophen, alcohol and liver damage...but most of the evidence re: unintentional overdoses are anecdotal, at best. There are people who have been taking large amounts of Tylenol for years, and seem to be fine. This would suggest confounding factors in the cases that are not fine--like a co-morbidity of some sort.
Again--this is not meant to be a criticism of your post. I'm just interested in your opinion or some additional information. I must admit, I don't know what to believe. Every now and then, when I take a few plain old Tylenol (ie, no narcotic blend), I feel my lower abdomen jump around a lot. And I actually imagine that it could be my liver protesting. But my doc says that's impossible...

I'm probably speaking of the same recent stories you cite re Tylenol. If there's ANY evidence of liver damage from Tylenol and alcohol (you know they both damage the liver by themselves), why risk it? It's not as if you have a second liver to survive with, like kidneys. I've been told by many MD's that fatal damage can be done to the liver before the person is even aware of any problem. That's very scary, as far as I'm concerned. I do know that alcohol interferes with the liver's abiltiy to cleanse drugs from blood, causing sometimes fatal concentrations to build up in one's system. I will confess that my weakness is for opiates. I hate alcohol. I think it's a crude and senseless way to get high. I've also seen the damage primarily drinkers do on the road. I have no sympathy whatsoever for drunk drivers. Now, that's a good use for the jail system!

Wonder how long you have to be taking the Vicoden ES before the Tylenol, Codiene does damage.  Can you guys confirm about 5 days of being clean of Vicoden ES will make for a clean urine test or blood test?  I take 2 and 1/2 Vic ES every 3-4 hrs /day.  I have true pain, but I know that I am abusing horribly.  Sharon, your doc says fatal damage from booze and tylenol?  Use for how long?  Seems everyone takes tylenol.  It's everywhere, even in hospitals.   I've got a friend who's doc has been prescribing Vicoden ES for 2 years now.  Where is the concern there?  Any ideas?  Neena

If you are taking 2.5 every 3-4 hrs., you are taking way to much tylenol into your system. I believe that would be about 15 to 20 pills a day, so that is 7500 to 10000 mgs of tylenol a day. And the most you are supposed to take is 4000 mgs. a day. Correct me if I am wrong Tom . But Neena if you drink alcohol on top of that then you can do serious damage to your liver.

How would I know if I suffer from Liver damage? I hear that the codiene itself does no damage, just the tylenol.  Liver damage comes with what sypmptoms?  I drink 2-3 beers /day usually to wine down.  If i stop this...can I save myself?  In your opinion.  Why are these doctors prescribing all of these pills for years on end to these people?  With this knowlege.  Neena

It's not really that hard to get pain meds. Maybe for some who live in the country.  But I live near DC, Annapolis, Baltimore.  There are a thousand hospitals, 10's of thousands of Dentists if you have bad teeth etc...blablabla  I WOULD NOT suggest going out and starting something you don't want to deal with in the long run though.  It will be very expensive, and cost your whole family a vass array of problems.  You could, ("notice I said COULD") become a recluse, grumpy, broke, tired, mean, edgy drug addict.  I know because I am that way.  Especially when I can't get to a dentist or hospital as soon as I want.  I have VERY VERY bad teeth, so... Let that speak for itself.  I have been, still am, and will always be recovering from Percocet 5, Morphine, Lortab, Lorcet, Lorcet Plus, Oxyconitin, Tylenol 3 + 4's , Darvocet (Weak), anything I can get my little hands on.  Most people won't listen to you anyway, but I can try at least.
I'm not condoning drug use, ther are millions who are not addicted, even more who are.  There are legitimate complaints out there, and most of these people on here have legitimate problems.  I am just saying please don't even think about starting up. After a while you start to think...Am I taking this **** for my pain?  Or..Am I taking this **** for my pain from addiction?  Because it is pain.

as far as I know, you're a thousand percent correct. Look, there are always people who, for whatever reason, take huge doses of something and walk away from it. You don't want to know about the Tylenol (in Vics) dosages I used to take back when everyone treated Tylenol like it was a breath mint. But people have died from mixing tylenol with alcohol. That's a fact. There probably were extenuating circumstances, but who among us can say for certain tonight that their liver is undamaged from their years of drugging? I'm plain spooked by the idea, backed up by several MDs I know, that you can kill yourself through liver damage and not even know it for days. I think we all assume that we'll get some kind of warning to back off before we do ourselves in with our drugs of choice. If you believe these docs, and I do, the warning scenerio regarding tylenol may not happen. How would you like to know you've killed yourself and have 3 or 4 days to think about it and wave goodbye to everyone? There are ways to get the tylenol out and forms of most drugs without tylenol. Why throw the gift of life away needlessly? By the way, they say Milk Thistle, available at the health food store, helps your liver to heal itslef. I keep meaning to get some. Anyone know about this stuff?

You were asking about liver damage do to Tylenol? I have that problem. I drank alcohol and used a lot of Vicodin and Lortab over the years. My liver damage showed up in blood tests long before I felt any symptoms. One day I woke up and noticed my eyes were yellow(jaundice). Over about two years I developed diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, nose bleeds, pain in my right upper abdomin, fatigue, nausea, cellulitis, and bleeding from minor cuts that took a long time to clot.
Luckily we are born with twice as much liver as we will ever use and it takes years of abuse to really go into liver failure. I'm operating right now on about 10% liver function. Life isn't easy with a bad liver. Some days I feel like I'm 90 years old.

Sorry to hear.  I haven't had my liver tested yet, I'm only 24 so far, but I've been through alot in such a short time.  I think that if you take anything in excess you will reap what you sow.  So in that I am sorry to hear about your liver damage.  From what I understand there is nothing you can take, or nothing you can do to repair a damaged liver.  I may be wrong but I don't think so.  Will somebody correct me if so?  I have heard that if you take Vitamin B, you can clean out your liver.  I think that is wrong, I was reading about liver damage and it said "Don't beleive thet lies and rumors about liver damage, if it is damaged, it is damaged" will somebody correct me if I am wrong?  Thanks and the best of luck to all of you.  Chad

I forgot to mention that I have Hepatitis C which is a virus that literally eats up your liver. I probably got it from a blood transfusion in 1974 while in the military. Another way to get it is sharing needles and sexual contact(rarely). I'm told that the liver does have regenerative powers as long as you watch your diet, don't drink and don't take Tylenol. Most of the people that I know personally with HEPC, found out while donating blood. They routinely test you for it now and have been since about 1992. In my case, I have had the disease for many years according to my liver biopsy and have extensive damage. At least I know what I will probably die from, ha, ha,!

Living on ten percenct of your liver?  Wow.  Thank you for writing back.  I was aware of the damage that the tylenol could do but still am wondering like after one year would there be damage.  I get nauseated and vomit occassionally.  I figured it was do to lack of food with the vicoden ES. When stopping cold turkey???...what can i expect??...any drugs to help.  I have her Immodium AD and xanax.  Your opinion will be valuable to me.  What is in my clean future?  How long will i suffer from withdrawels and what are they?  Thanks again, Neena

Hey!  I have been reading your posts...  Why are you so desperate to quit?  What is motivating you?  I mean, you don't just sound like you "just" decided to quit.  Even though you didn't say there was a reason you had to quit, you just sound like there's a time limit.  You sound like I did.  Why are you so worried about a doctor finding it in your system if there isn't a reason?  Just wondering...

I would'nt worry too much about liver damage after one year of usage. Your main concern seems to be detox from Vicodin. Like Mahria, I don't know what your motivation to quit is. Sounds like maybe a guilt trip. While I was high and had a good supply, I never thought about quitting. Fear of withdrawals is a way of life for us. Withdrawals are inevitable though and all of us here have survived them. I've done it cold turkey several times and each time I learn something new about myself. There just isn't an easy way to get clean and stay clean that I know of. The urge to use is always just around the corner!

With withdrawals...what shall I expect?  Any meds to take for help?  Right now i still have a whole script in my possession.  I usually think about quitting when I have tons of them.  Funny, huh?  Will my stomach hurt?  I have actual pain, so I am assuming that that will all return horribly, will I vomit, have cramps?  Become depressed, unable to sleep?  Sorry for all the questions.  Thanks for your help and prompt responses.
