pregnant

Is it possible to wean off hydrocodone during pregnancy without severe withdrawal. I have a two year old to take care of and I am six weeks pregnant. I am trying to wean off and feel like I am so tired and cannot function. HELP!!!!

I caught the time lapse...but figured, why not? :)

Be aware I'm not talking about using prescribed medicine in the way it's supposed to be used. I'm talking about using a medication to the point of having withdrawal consequences.  If you're talking about short term usage, then I won't comment on if there's any damage or not, I don't know (although the way they preach against taking one drink or having one cigarette... you have to wonder).
But I could provide links on the effects of chemical dependency on the birth child. Most of them are methadone oriented, strangely, they're finding that the correlation between the amount of methadone in the mother is correlative to the amount the fetus is receiving. Apparently, with other opiates, it's not as clear.
Keep in mind, that means the same doctors who were saying five years ago (and many still are) that addicts should be placed on methadone and NOT detox for the birth (detox the baby afterwards)...are...now apparently wrong.

So I could care less about how many awards or degrees a doctor has. Wrong is wrong. Simple as that. All those degrees tend to make an armour against admitting you may just be wrong.
As to studies...well, most of what they've done is based on inference from NICU statistics. So perhaps there aren't actually any studies specifically, there is A LOT of relevant information.

Ah, for those curious, they are doing the first double blind study on the effects of methadone vs. suboxone on post natal withdrawal. They're taking two groups, giving half methadone and half suboxone, and then seeing what the survival rate is among the infants detoxing after birth...and tracking them afterwards through childhood for any various ailments. Should be interesting to see the total results in 20 years.

Congrat's on the healthy 1 year old tot, by the way! :)

You really need to stop saying the things you're saying regarding pain medication and pregnancy. There are many women who NEED it while pregnant for various reasons.  I DID.
There is absolutely NO evidence of it damaging the brain.  OI know that they do not have any adewuate studies because no one is going to do a drug study on pregnant women but my dr has followed up throughout the years with every single patient he prescribed pain medication to in order to have some statistics.
I will go on record saying that my 1 year old is incredibly smart and I'm quite positive she will remain so.  If my nationally accredited and one of NY Magazine's TOP DOCTORS in the US said he knows what he's doing then I will go with that and he is the one who prescribed them for me.  I took them as told.
I just think you are putting info out there that a; isn't necessarily true and that b; you're way of scaring them into help is not only mean but again unnecessary.
Just advise these woman to go the dr.

If it's early in your pregnancy, it's a very good time to detox, before brain development begins. The longer you wait, the more stress you put on the developing fetus. If you wait until you child is born, then you'll be looking at a child who will have an incredibly high chance of death from seizure or other neurological impairment, as well as life long physical mental problems.

Please note, I'm talking about pain med's in terms of addiction, not temporary use for a problem. The fact is, you can't be sure of the long term damage potentially done to your baby since it hasn't lived it's life yet. It's easy to say "my baby is healthy and fine" now, when he's 1, 2, 5 15 years old. But...how can you know if he's at an increased risk for problems when older? Heart attack, blood pressure, cancer even (and can anyone know the long term mental effects of having your baby born an addict and going through withdrawals as it's first life experiences? Considering how damaging it is to us as adults?!?!?)

I'vbe been reading some interesting studies on this because it keeps coming up. Near facts about the different effects of different opiates on addicted infants, the relationship between addicted mothers and their fetus's, etc... and the consensues is they don't know a lot, but what they do know is it's like playing russian roulette with a six shooter with five chambers loaded.

The fact is, they don't know alot about the long term damages done to babies born addicted. They're only aware of the high chances of death involved with detox of these infants while in the NICU.

Hi,
I had a baby recently and helped Angel54 with questions. I know a lot and can really help you. How much are you taking, and for how long were you taking?
Please do not stress...it is not dangerous for the baby in prescribed doses, BUT you have to have all of the facts. Anything in high doses is dangerous and you need to tell your doctor. Please send me a personal message on this forum and I can talk to you in more depth about it.
I need more info from you to help you.
please contact me!

I strongly suggest you TELL your doctor. You can taper slowly off of it . IF you tell your doctor they will help you . I do know if you dont tell and your baby is born addicted they will contact DSS.
The best thing you can do for the both of you is tell and work out a taper schedule .Plz keep us posted.
good luck

I was taking percocet throughout my entire pregnancy. I just gave birth to my twins last Saturday 12/01 and they are both PERFECTLY HEALTHY. I was taking percocet before I got pregnant and up until I was about 5-6 months pregnant I was taking around 60-80 miligrams a day. Towards the end of my pregnancy I was taking around 40 miligrams a day. Like you I was very scared that my babies would be born addicted and I was afraid to tell my doctor I was taking them. I did alot of research, but could not find much, I did talk to someone on medhelp that had went through the same issue and she had friends that are doctors. She had told me that you have to take 80 miligrams or more a day for the baby to become addicted. I never did tell my doctor that I was taking them and they are fine with no signs of withdrawl. I had them at 33 weeks, ( but twins usually come early) they are breathing on their own and will be coming home in about 2 weeks. I am not telling you to go crazy and take any or all the pills you want. You should only take what you need in order to not go through withdrawl. I was told that withdrawl while pregnant is ery dangerous. If you are able to wean off slowly so that you are not taking anything would be the best unless you have serious pain that would cause you to be stressed and constantly hurting, because you being in pain is not good for the baby either. If you have any other questions please feel free to e-mail me ***@****. I know exactly how you feel because I went through the same thing and having the woman I talked to on medhelp who had been through the same thing really eased my mind and helped me through. Currently I am only taking 30-40 miligrams a day and hope to cut down to 20 in the next 2 weeks and then stop completely within a month. Good luck.

please start weaning off of it slowly but let your doctor know so that he can help, because a severe withdrawl can cause a miscarriage. Whatever you do don't let your doctor put you on methadone though cause the withdrawls from that on a newborn infant could cause a very long stay in the hospital for your baby. It has similar withdrawls as to herion on a newborn, but some doctors prescribe it for percocet and vicodin withdrawls for pregnant women.hope this helps and good luck.

Yes, you can step down off the hydrocodone during the pregnancy- the sooner the better. I think you should make your doctor aware of your situation, but if that's out of the question then start cutting your dose back now. I don't know how much you're taking, but reduce it every few days. Yes, you're going to be tired, but you're also going to experience fatigue from the pregnancy.

You can do this, just don't try to do it overnight...it's going to take some time.

I really don't know what to say about this one. I am afraid what I say will come out wrong. All I can say is read what you wrote over and over. That should help you get off the drug. My eyes are tearing up just reading it. Good luck and God bless. Give your lil' one a kiss. Do it for your children. They need their mommy. You would kill someone for hurting them , right? Don't do it yourself.
