why are doctors lying about Paxil withdrawl

I think I have learned the answer to my own question. Doctors do not tell you about Paxil withdrawl because they are
living by the code of the new medical profession, just shut up and prescribel drugs that are partly harmful.  sure there have been 100's of Class Action Lawsuits for the birth defects caused by taking Paxil when pregnant. Glaxo smith kline is still saying to the public after they have shelled out BILLIONs in settlements. There are no harmful effects from Paxil.

Who do they think they are kidding. ?We can read. the biggest lawsuit came out of California.there are probably thousands of us in every state and every country who have suffered on the drug, or getting off the drug. We can't even ask the babies born addicted or with severe birth defects. They Cant talk.

I am infuriated by what just I have gone through trying to get off this damn drug. I titrated down from 20 to 10 mg and back up to 15 and then started back down by the teensiest increments. Here is a list of my reactions that I can find words to describe.

  lightheadedness all day

confusion about the tiniest things, like what am I in the middle of doing right now ?

  extreme short temperedness

thoughts of leaving everyone in my life who are annoying me 100 fold

uncontrolled trembling and profuse sweating every other second

  sensitivity to loud voices, T.V.

  strange tastes

can only eat certain things that appeal to me. Certain textures and tastes are appalling.

  insomnia

the worst muscle spasms and tightness ever., in buttocks, thighs, calves and even arms.

restless legs you feel like cutting off.

flashes of sensation in my head I can't really describe with words ( and I am a writer)

no return to depression( which is the symptom doctors describe will happen to you if you withdraw.) none

thinking you might be crazy because all these things are happening to your body and mind

I am really angry and becoming less trusting of the medical profession. I have a psychiatrist who is so smart and well read on every drug.  So why did he play dumb, when he prescribed it and when I told him how withdrawing was affecting me ?

and we think conspiracies are only in the minds of " crazy" people.

I am highly educated , worked my whole life, have plenty of friends , was never crazy , and got off this stupid drug while seeing my psychologist twice a week. Since psychologists do not dispense medications they are not tuned into the intricacies of medications. She has been as aghast as I . My psychiatrist , on the other had  listened to me but not once indicated he was familiar with what I am experiencing. He knows better and I am gravely disappointed in this man I entrusted my health and well being to.  I feel like suing his socks off. I will join a class action suit from my state, Michigan. To hell with Glaxo-Smith Kline. They deserve everything that ever happens to discredit them. So far, they make enough money to keep settling these lawsuits. And the medication is NOT off the market. .

This is a sore subject for me, being that I've personally greatly benefited from antidepressants, and having also seen people have bad experiences.

In this day and age, with the internet and our advanced technology, there is simply NO reason for ANYONE to not be educated about a medication.  Now, that being said, I also strongly feel that doctors and medical professionals could do a better job educating their patients on the risks/benefits of medications, procedures, etc.  But, a doctor's lack of informing the patient doesn't excuse a person from doing their own homework.  We always need to be our own advocate...in the end, the onus lies with US, not the doctors.  Having faith in your doctor is important, but one should NEVER have blind faith.

The information is out there, and actually VERY easy to find.  Heck, EVERY Rx drug in the US is required to be accompanied by an educational monograph (which, btw are VERY detailed).  How many people just pitch those, never even looking at them? ANYTHING and everything you would want to know about a medication can be found with a simple web search.  A matter of seconds.  People have apps for the weather, their sleep cycles, diets, exercise, moods, relationships, recipes, their pets, but when it comes to medication, they don't do their due diligence and research the medication for themselves so they can make an informed decision.  That to me is just crazy.

The other issue is that in the world of medicine, a lot of these medications are essentially babies.  There is a lot that the medical community isn't even aware of yet.  It takes decades to be able to thoroughly study a medication, gather data, and publish info about the risks and long term effects.  Antidepressants like Paxil  are definitely newbies in terms of medications...however, in recent years, there has been a LOT more info put out there.

Are there bad doctors?  Sure.  Is there a profit motivating factor?  Sometimes.  Are medications often over prescribed, without trying other avenues first?  Absolutely.  But NONE of that excuses a person from doing their own homework, and making an informed decision.  People who have had GOOD experiences with medications rarely seek out a forum to talk about it...while on the contrary, people who have had bad experiences tend to want to share their stories, as much as they can.  And, while that's a good thing, it helps to keep the perspective to remember that the horror stories do NOT represent everyone.

Finally, Paxil is one of the more difficult antidepressants to come off.  As is Effexor.  The info is out there, with strong recommendations about the need to be carefully, deliberately tapered off these drugs.  There is ample info about the "discontinuation syndrome" commonly seen with antidepressants.  All you have to do is take the time to look, or even read the paperwork that comes with your medication.  Once you've done your homework, that is the time to have a discussion with your doctor about any concerns or questions you may have, BEFORE deciding to try a new medication.

I have nothing but compassion for people who have had bad experiences with medications, but often times (not always).....a LOT of the pain and suffering could have been avoided (if not at least minimized) if the patient had advocated for themselves.....and put as much effort into doing their homework as they do playing candy crush, or posting on facebook and twitter.

Wonderful post addlover.  I have been on anti-depressants off and on over the years because I went to my Dr seeking help for depression. Without AD's, I wouldn't have made it through some very dark moments...I believe that wholeheartedly. I researched each med and even though coming off was a b*tch, I knew it would be difficult and tapered appropriately. Same holds true for the pain meds I took, I sought help for pain over and over again...legit pain. We tried all sorts of treatment. My Dr is truly amazing and tried to help me and does to this day. I just wanted to add my story because not all Dr's are bad. Please do your research when choosing a Dr and when taking any type of medicine. Read the papers that come with the meds.  Google websites such as MH and see what others are saying. Please look out for yourself as Dr's are typically helping us get through based on the info we provide.  As Merri stated above, they weigh the pro's and cons and do their best to decide.
Wishing you the best!

Id like to be angry at my psychiatrist but I just cant!  I was at one of the darkest places in my life and he put me on Effexor and it helped me crawl out of that despair. I didnt research the drug I just took it cause I was desperate at that point!  I know that when I start to wean off next week that I will probably hate him cause Im sure there will be withdrawals!  But I am the one who chose to take the pills!  Did he warn me about the withdrawals...NO!  But I was the one who took them!  At least he is going to help me wean off of them and I am sure will help me through it!  Maybe I have a good one I dont know...we will see what happens!  I do hope that you feel better soon and that the symptoms start going away!  Im sure I will be howling soon enough!  Take care of yourself!!!!!

I realize you trusted your doctor to make the best medical treatment protocol for you. But as an educated person, some of your treatment lies in your hands also.  Don't spend your energy looking up ways to sue or get angry at the medical professionals. Before going on any medicine/vitamin,  maybe a quick Google search would have saved you the painful withdrawal. We as patients/consumers owe it to ourselves to advocate for ourselves. I wouldn't even buy something as simple as a lamp without research. Let alone a Drug. I realize there may be some unscrupulous doctors out there. But don't think the majority spent years in school to just make a quick buck and screw over their patients. It's always easier to blame someone for our hardships. But bottom line we need to question everything. I really don't want to make you angry, this is just my opinion. Take from it what you want. But some responsibility lies within you

You are so right. These Doctors know what they are doing. They are keeping patients by prescribing poison and knew they would be back for more, before they realize what has happened. It's the same with so many bad drugs. They know exactly what they are doing!

My Mom died in 2007 with MS. She was on Paxil before they stopped all her meds while she was on her death bed. I didn't know they had pulled all of them, including Paxil, Phentanyl, Morphine. She called wanting help (I live about 100 miles away). That's all she knew, she needed help. When you asked her what she wanted she didn't know, Then she wanted to go to rehab, this was days before she passed. It was gruesome. When I went down there I asked her if she wanted a chocolate shake from Burger King. She said "who wouldn't". I wasn't thinking that she would have to be cleaned up. I think they were withholding food too.

The Doctor that put me on Soma 4x a day with 11 refills, 4 Vicodin with 4 refills and pretty sure it was 4 Valium a day but I only took 3, was running a Suboxone Clinic. He'd get people hooked in door #1, get them on Suboxone in door #2. A clear conflict of interest. Then all the sudden he sold his practice and moved to another state. It was getting too hot for him here, even though I liked and trusted him I can see now that it was all an act so he could make his millions and live large. He left a LOT of people on suboxone with nothing but a bad habit and nowhere to turn. The new Drs could only take 12 suboxone patients for the first year.

What many of these Doctors are doing is criminal. Do it, sue that sucker, let me know how you come out. many of us are victims of Doctors wanting to get rich, leaving us addicted to meds we never needed or asked for. Then they play stupid and say they didn't know how bad it was. I know that because a Doctor told me he didn't know, 3 years after he told a friend of mine he didn't know. All these Doctors lie, yep, it IS the new practice of medicine..

I was on Paxil for few months. Started out fine and then i became too dizzy. It's one of the side effects of the medication. I decided to quit cold turkey. I had the worst time of my life. Depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. Took me like 3 weeks to get better. All antidepressants are bad for you . Better  to treat depression through counseling than popping pills. It's easier to get off street drugs than prescription medications. They wanted to give me Prozac or Zoloft and i told my doctor to go f..k himself. They want $ from our insurance, they don't care.

I just looked up Paxil on drugs.com. I look up all medicines there before taking. It does list you can go through wd, that itcsn cause birth defects, can pass through breast milk to baby and many of the side affects yiu listed as experiencing. The info is out there. Sometimes the Drs have to weigh the pros and cons when trying to help their patients. Also most do not experience them. I amverytiredall sensitive to medicine so I am very aware of what can happen when taking something.
