withdrawing from percocet effecting my performance at work and scaring the **** out of me.

I have been using percocet recreationally for almost a year.  As with others, it got to where I needed more to feel the same high.  I never thought it would get this bad.  I realized that I am addicted to percocets about a month ago, when i couldn't get any.  I don't want to use them anymore, and I don't want to have a physical addiction.  I have an important job, so I'm planning a 9 day vacation ay my friends house, to detox myself and go through the symptoms of withdrawal.  In the meantime, if I tell my primary care doctor will i be put in rehab? Will my employer be notified? Will I hafta go to group meetings?

Will I be able to get off the drug in about a week? If I ask my primary care doctor what will happen? I'm scared and I'm not in control and I hate it.

Welcome to the forum! You have posted on an old post,so go to top and hit the 'Post a Question' button and start your own post. Take a look at the Health Pages on the right side. Look up the Thomas Recipe and Amino Acids. Vitamins 2x/day and lots of water vitamin C and exercise can help you get past the 7 days.

Generally its 1 pill 3 times a day.. if it makes you dizzy you can cut back.. The ones I have are 0.1 mgs  I weigh a lil less than 100lbs so I only take half of one twice a day.. they reduce your blood pressure therefor taking away the jumping out of your skin feeling and the heart racing.. they help alot.. docs can also give patches of it if you prefer.. hope that helps.. IF you need anything just go to the top and "post new question" and put my name in there.. I will get to you as soon as I can...

If you tell your dr., just hope you'll never need pain meds again, because he might be very hesitant to prescribe them knowing you were addicted to them.

Just a thought.

And, I don't think your doc can tell your employer, nor have you put in rehab.

B12 shots are good for energy.  Your asking "what will happen if I tell my doctor".  Where have you been getting your percocets?  Doctor, friends, street, etc...?  If you have been getting the percocets from the doctor I'm sure he/she will be willing to help you taper down.  If you are getting them from friends or the street the only reason you need to say something to your doctor is if you want his/her help to get off the meds.  If I were you I would go in and see a pain specialist that specializes in Suboxone (google if you are not sure what it is).  Most family doctors don't know how to handle withdrawals and will not sympathize with you (including the ER).  I'm sorry you are going through this, take care and good luck...

There are several books that will put you well on your way toward Recovery even before you stop taking the pills:

End Your Addiction Now, by Charles Gant

Seven Weeks to Sobriety, by Joan Larson (good book, bad title)

The Mood Cure, by Julia Ross

Staying Sober, by Gorski & Miller

Staying Clean & Sober, by Miller & Miller

If you a) pay close attention to (and follow the directions of) the aspects of all the books regading nutrients and amino acids and b) slowly taper down to a minimal daily dose between now and your vacation, you will find your 9 days much easier and far more productive.

I will caution you, however, that getting clean is relatively easy - it's the staying clean part that throws most addicts for a loop.  However,  all of the info you need for that is in the above-noted books too.  Staying Sober has a very good section on PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome), which almost always becomes a significant issue in Recovery.

Good luck to you

I went to work and had to come home. Should I go see my dr. and get suboxine? or will I go through the same trying to get off that? I took tommorrow off will it get better or harder from here on out?

If you leave a post for FLaddict she can give you the low down on sub. I wish you the best on your road to recovery.

Casey:
It sounds like you have a good plan and your physical symptoms should be almost over in 5 days. You might have some struggles with the mental aspect and you can find that information on the net. Just looks under PAWS and it will explain everthing regarding the aftermath of this insidious drug.

Best of luck to both of you.

Tim

Ask your primary if he will keep the information in confidence and I bet he will?

The 3 rd day is by far the worst day... tommorrow may not be too pretty either. But on day 5 you will feel tons better.. I would stick it out without Sub.. however asking your doc for some clonidine and something to help you sleep would be a great idea.. clonidine helps with the restless, awful feeling.. If you have a doc you can go to and trust getting clonidine would help you alot..  Sub works great for the first couple days.. but you are past that..  keep hanging on you are in the middle of the worst of it..

How are you feeling at the moment?  You say that you have been off the percocets for 3 days, correct?  It really depends on how you are feeling right now.  Usually after 3 days (for some individuals) the withdrawals start to get better.  Suboxone should be used for individuals that can not handle the withdrawals and know they will relapse. Do you know what the "Thomas Recipe" is?  My advice to you is use the "Thomas Recipe" for the remaining side effects of the withdrawal.  Withdrawal is different for everyone.  Some people start to get better after 3 days, some it takes a little longer.  Overall this is your call.

Suboxone: Tablet containing buprenorphine and naloxone.

Buprenorphine: A medication used to treat adults addicted to or dependent on opiates such as pain medications, heroin or methadone. It is available in oral form (sublingual tablets) and injectable form. As part of an addiction treatment program, the medication is taken in its oral form. Buprenorphine blocks the effects of other opiates and eliminates cravings and symptoms of withdrawal.

Naloxone: Is a special narcotic drug that reverses the effects of other narcotic medicines.

Good luck,

Lizzy

your making a good move by taking the 9 day vacation and being with a friend. you dont really have to let your dr know..thats up to you. tech ..your dr cant notify anyone about this. unless of course your a dr.
before you start this here are some things you will need ok
oh and BTW 9 days..you should well on your way ovet this and much better
imodium-lots of it
banannas - to ease the RLS
hot baths-lots of them
motrin or something like it to ease some the body aches.
vitimans  b and c are good.

please go back to page 2 or 3 on here and find the Thomas recipe it explains in more depth what you need and how to use it.
casey...im on day 9 of a hydro/loritab additcion and percs are basically the same. your first cpl days may be rough but just use the advice here and ask questions and read how ppl are doing from day to day. support is a key in kicking this and thats why we are here.
you wont to kick it..we will raise your leg but the rest is up to you.

Casey, I know what you are going through, I have been addicted to percs. for over 4 years now, taking 6-9 a day everyday. I stopped 8 days ago, not by choice just cause i couldn't get any more from any one. I even had 5 family Dr's. so i had no choic but to quit. I quit cold turkey. Went through all the withdrawals for the first 6 days it killed me, but i made it this far. You can do this, trust me if i can anyone can. the physical pains are pretty much gone but mentally i still hurt. I keep thinking bout them but refuse to go back again. Take one day at a time. it does get easier. They all told me that on here when i first found this site, i didn't believe it, but OMG it does. and talking on here is what really helps me, just to know others are going through what u r going through really makes a huge difference. Take one day at a time, think positive, and it does get easier, just please be patient......
