Also my doctor has me on 20mg of ambien a night. Some people say it is not addictive, but I sure am having a hard time with stopping ambien.

I don't have a great answer for that.  They certainly have sedative effects, and all sedatives mess with sleep;  people on benzodiazepines chronically usually end up with sleep problems as well.  Whenever a sedating medication is wearing off, the withdrawal includes activation, which disrupts sleep-- and people on opiates for a long time will attest that they seem to always be withdrawing!

I will do some reading and see if I can find a more 'scientific' answer-- something including circadian rhythms and corticosteriods!  Feel free to write if you have some ideas--
