5 hour energy drinks

Does anyone know if these are safe for people with adrenal problems? I know that those with caffeine are very detrimental and I looked on the bottle, and do not recall caffeine as one of the ingredients.

Old post. Oh well.

Not all energy drinks have thae same ingrediants.

The ones with a lot of caffine just provide a short burst of energy and are the most dangerous if overconsumed. Not all have a "lot" of caffine though.

The secret to most energy drinks that provide SUSTAINED energy is taurine, which is more usable in the body with caffine. Taurine is also known to support weak adrenals and available in capsules but not as effective in that form. These energy drinks work better in people with weak adrenals, it gives them a calm energy as opposed to the jitters one gets from only caffine. this is also the reason why they have almost no effect on some people - those with health adrenals.

Yes this is a question about 5 hour energy

I have had CFIDS for over ten years.  Before i was your basic super human type that would spend my off times competing and playing with friends.  For instance (ride 120 miles from 7 till noon, Lunch, run 3 miles, then play volleyball with friends till dark.  Then go out.

About ten years ago something went wrong, started loosing hair, feeling sleepy, gaining weight, intolerance to cold, brain for, sick all the time.  Could not even ride a bike as I would have to spend days recovering.  In a word debilitating.

Was diagnosed with CFIDs and Fibromyalgia.  I now take thyroid, cortisol and a host of vitamins and nutritional supps and have Meyers infusions at least once a month.  No cokes or diet sodas or artificial sweetiner.  This is required to bring me to 60% of what I was.

Here is the strange thing about 5 Hour energy -----  On a 100 mile bike ride  riding at 85 % heart rate, properly hydrated and nourished through out.  Taking shot blocks (caffeine / carbo), I start to run out of energy at 2 hours.  At three hours (60 miles) my heart rate starts climbing to 90%.

At this point coffee, shot blocks, cliff bars, goo, banana gatorade nothing can stop the increasing heart rate and the loss of power except and I am not promoting it a bottle of five hour energy.

I do not know why but after drinking the bottle my heart rate slows back into the mid 80's% and I can continue for another 40 miles.

I have studied all the ingredients and agree this is not possible, But it is true as I have seen the effects in over 20 rides.

My question is how can this be possible???

Thanks

My neuro-endo has never restricted my coffee or caffeine intake. My genetic testing shows that I metabolize caffeine quickly - others may not and may have more jitters. I never get jitters.

Peggy, you do no know what you are talking about.  The reason 5 hour energy drink works is that it provides amino-acids (proteins) which provide lasting energy instead of the quickly depleted energy provided by carbs (sugars).  The caffine is for a quick energy boost (they used to sell a non-cafinated 5 hour energy drink, I am not sure if they still do) and as an analgesic to get the ingredients into your system quicker.

5 hour energy drink really does actually work.  And I own no stock in the company, though I sure wish I did!

I decided to try 5 Hour Energy last week. I've had Addison's for 28 years, and as I get older I have less energy. Of course, doesn't everyone, but I think Addison's chips away at a person more.

Anyhow, I wasn't sure how I'd react, so the first day I took two capfuls. Nothing. Then the next day I drank about half of what was left in the 2 oz. bottle. I definitely noticed that I wasn't as sleepy at work. I didn't have a crash, and didn't feel any side effects. Two days later, I finished off the bottle, which had about an ounce left in it. I got a lot of sewing projects finished.

Did this product work for me? Yes.
Did it work better than a cup of coffee? Yes (and I drink it strong).
Did it work about the same as a serving of mac & cheese and a Coke? Pretty much. (Mac & cheese or potato chips & Coke are what I use to bring myself 'round if I'm out & about & start to feel "Addison's-y.")

I'm researching the long-term effects of the ingredients. If I'm going to use this product, I'd like to know that I'm not putting my liver, kidneys, or other organs at risk.

It is indeed expensive (about $2.50 for 2 ounces), but actually less than a bag of potato chips & a Coke, and just a little more than a double Americano with a dash of salt and sugar. It all depends on how you want to spend your food dollars. For me, as long as my research doesn't dig up nasty side-effects, it's worth it.

Let me go ahead and explain this product to all those who think of this as the new "Miracle Energy."
The biggest argument in using 5 Hour is that it has only 4 calories. Calories=energy. This is the same concept of why we eat food which is calorie dense and provides energy. Specifically the quickest reacting calorie is carbohydrates which is why athletes are recommended to consume 60% or more a day of carbohydrates. 5 hour has 0 carbohydrates which = 0 energy. So lets talk about what IS in 5 Hour. For one you have the 8 oz coffee equivalent of caffeine. Well we all know that caffeine increases alertness. Every energy drink has this and so does coffee which happens to be a tons cheaper than 5 hour. Other ingredients include:

Niacin-Coenzyme in carbohydrate/lipid metabolism. In other words it breaks down carbohydrates to be used as energy. Interesting enough, this is found in FOOD

B6-Coenzyme in amino acid (protein) metabolism. It breaks down protein to be used as energy. Guess what? This is also found in FOOD

B12-Coenzyme in blood formation and nervous system function. And again, if you eat food then your on track to consuming enough B12.

Folic Acid-Coenzyme in amino acid metabolism. Also found in food.

The final ingredients make up your "Energy Blend" of Taurine, Malic Acid, Glucuronlactone and a few others, non of which are energy providing nutrients. In fact Taurine is found in ALL energy drinks and there is not 1 single study which provides results that Taurine is a component of energy production. This is true for the rest of the above "Herbal Ingredients" as well.

For all those who believe you are experiencing increased energy using this product. You ARE and your doing it for 3 times the cost that you could be by simply drinking an 8 oz of coffee. The only ingredient in 5 Hour that is providing "alertness" is caffeine. It is a shame that so many people out there fall for marketing schemes because of their own lack of knowledge in the field of nutrition. Hopefully this has provided some much needed information on what is actually in 5 Hour and what actually provides energy to the human body. Stop wasting your money for $3 Five Hour Energy products and go consume carbohydrates and a little added caffeine if need be and enjoy the energy providing benefits that food offers. You will even save money in the process.

Hi Peggy....I would love for you to bring this question over to the complimentary medicine website. That way we can discuss the different herbs used for the caffeine lift which isnt always listed as actual caffeine. Guarana is one of them. Green tea is another.

Last year, my 27 year old son, had to call an ambulance in the middle of the night.  He had been working out the day before and had drank the equivalant of 5 Monster drinks.  His adrenal glands had a hay day with severe anxiety.  EMS thought he was having a heart attack.  When they read the ingredients on the bottle my son had drank, they told him it had alot of caffeine in it (the words caffeine were not listed - but a certain ingredient which I've not heard of before this is indeed caffeine).

Beware when buying/using those drinks :o)
