New here....

I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right place.  I have always been one to go out on the weekends with my friends or my husband and have a few beers.  For the past year I have been drinking a beer or two almost every day....just to kinda unwind I guess.  We still go out maybe once a week and have a few more than that too.  I don't drink to get drunk, I just like the taste of a cold beer.  I guess I'm wondering if I have a problem.  I've heard that when you stop drinking cold turkey, you can get really sick...I don't want that.  I, also, don't want to completely quit.  I just think maybe it would be good to cut down a little?

Any thoughts??

Take the suggestion about the test. Why not find another thing to unwind which will leave money in your bank account?I know it is bad for you health wise and for me I have an allergy to it, I lost everything to drugs and booze, some people are different from others with this disease.all the best

hello. why do you feel you may have a problem? does your consumption affect your work, relationships, finances or physical/psychological well-being? 1-2 drinks a day would fit my definition of moderation, unless mixed with other substances. when you drink more, do you find that you do things you later regret, or ever have difficulty stopping? to give you an example, if i start drinking, i can't stop at a couple, and i never know what will happen or how long it will last. there are other things to consider also such as pre-existing medical issues like liver problems, or using certain medications like acetaminophen that can  cause damage when combined with alcohol. chronic use of alcohol over a period of time can result in unpleasant and potentially life-threatening effects that don't occur with moderation. i can't tell you if you have a potential problem (indicated by a marked increase in amount/frequency or negative impact on quality of life) but you sound like you are presently not at risk. you might want to check out some of the other posts on here to learn more if you are concerned. hope this helped and welcome.  gm

Hi soonergal,

Here's a link to a quiz you can take to help you decide if you have a problem:

alcoholism.about.com/od/tests/l/blquiz_alcohol.htm

If I'm not mistaken, the prevailing current medical advice for women is to consume no more than one drink a day.

Cheers,
