Had a nights drinking after 30 days off, not sure how far I have set myself back

Well I was not a particularly heavy drinker but very frequent like most evenings. I had quite mild withdrawals and am still not sure if I was truely dependent but I definately had/have a drink problem. After 30 days without drink I relapsed and had a nights drinking on a social function with work colleagues. I didnt go over the top but did drink most of the evening so did have quite a few. I only intended to have a couple but I chose to stick with the night out and didnt drink anything when I got home.
I think I can do this, just having drinks at social functions only. However I sort of know that coming back of it will effect me during the week and not sure if its worth the hassle and I probably should just not do it. Problem is I can choose to stop but am aware of the withdrawal symptoms. Think I would be happier if I just stop completely but dont want to cut out what is effectively part of my social life. Any advise?

Hmm it is distorted logic, so bad. I think I do need to admit I have crossed the line and have entered the realms of addiction and that I cannot control drink when I do so it would be wise to stop completely. Thanks for responses so far

Don' drink, go to AA meetings, read the Big Book, and get a sponsor. You will still have a social life sober.
Good luck

I read ur post 3 times....and chuckled for the logic of we alcoholics is as open aired as a large piece of edel lace swiss cheese!:)"well i was not a heavy drinker.......BUT i had withdrawals......NORMAL non problematic drinkers do NOT have withdrawals! Not sure i was dependent.....BUT i had a drinking problem!google the DSM-IV definition of Alcohol Dependence!Didn't go over the top BUT drank most of the evening...and had QUITE a few!do u see how u r BS'ing urself here?I would be wise 4 u to take the steps to stop drinking and learn how to live ur life minus it.......many of us here do know how to do that and can relate to ur distorted logic prior to making a commitment 2 ourselves to cease the insanity.

You are only fooling yourself here.  Once we have crossed the line into addiction there is no turning back.  You are justifying your "social" drinking now.  If you continue with this thinking it is going to turn on you in a bad way.  After we stop drinking our addiction doesnt go away.  That is when it begins.  Using is just a symptom of what goes on inside us.  Most of us on this site have a very strong support system(aftercare) in place as doing it our way just didnt work.  You can still have a social life without drinking.....Please think about this.  Dancing with the devil has a deadly outcome..........sara
