Binge Drinking

Thanks for responding.  Do I want to stop binging?  Yes I DO.  But, I want to be one of those people surrounding me who can stop at 3 glasses – and still have a wonderful evening! Forgive my naivety and petulance .  I’m frustrated with myself.  There is a 4 litre cask of wine in the fridge right now and I’m not even tempted to touch it.  Why?  I just don’t understand how these cravings work or why?
But, that said, I’ve given myself a target of 30 alcohol free days – so far I’ve gone 3 days without a drink.  I’ve told my partner and he was very accepting.  This weekend will be a tremendous challenge, however, because we have three days off and two of them will be spent at a gorgeous bed and breakfast with a spa – a luxury that seems synonymous with champagne.

Hello. Its good that you are making an effort to address your drinking. However, If you are potentially an alcoholic, and resume drinking, you will quickly find that things are just as bad as before. Are you an alcoholic? Only you can decide, but for the most part, non alcoholics don't feel a need to control their drinking. Getting sober also means making other changes, the places you go, people you hang out with, even things like the kind of music you listen to. The mind associates many things with alcohol, which can be triggers. I would suggest after 30 days, try for another 30. See how you feel. It can't make things worse. And of course, checking out aa wouldn't hurt either. If nothing else, it would provide a wealth of knowledge about drinking problems, and provide insight as to whether or not you potentially have a serious problem. Either way, keep posting here, and let us know how things are going. Were here to help. Take care, GM

I hate to break it to you, but 30 days probably won't help.  I am also a binge drinker, or alcoholic.  I have quit for 6 months now, and I'm afraid to even try it.  I quit for a month before and it didn't seem to help.
The first time that you have a drink you concentrate really hard to not go overboard, and it sometimes works.  Then you think you can handle it, so you keep upping yourself.

Be careful.  Some people can't be 3 drink people.  Unfortunately I am one of them.  I feel like I miss out on social gatherings, but I'm not screwing up my life like I used to.

Good luck.  Only you know what is good for you.
