moods & alcohol

For about a year I've been drinking red wine before I go to sleep at night.  It helps me "wind down," sleep well, and my mood has improved during the day.  I am calmer & a little happier.  Unfortunately I don't think it's a good habit.  Some nights (I admit) I drink too much & my stomach hurts the next day.  In a way this is good, as I've lost weight, (I'm overweight) but ultimately this can't be healthy.  I've tried to stop a few times (which lasted about 4 days each time)  I get cold symptoms & my mood & sleep deteriorate to the point that I start drinking again. I do function well at work and I only drink late at night.
Should I switch to an anti depressant?  Would that be any more healthy (long-term) than this?
I honestly thank you for any input.

At the end of the day it depends how badly drink is affecting your life and how badly you want to stop drinking….
Are you willing to take advice even if it is advice you may not like.
For now you “admit” you drink to much some nights and that it helps you to sleep, you also say you tried to stop. Most alcoholics would identify with these as early signs of a developing problem.

Thank you for your reply.  I think you are right, particularily "you need to find a healthier  way to unwind'  and "you need to deal with any underlying problems '  seems like an overwhelming task, but again, thanks!

hi,
I think you need to chat with your family doctor, you need to find a healthier  way to unwind. You say you tried to stop drinking wine but cant, this is a concern. Taking medication may help but you need to deal with any underlying problems and drugs wont do this.
