I know what you're looking for and I personally don't feel comfortable giving any of this info on a public forum...

The doctor you saw sounds like a wimp! He could tell you how to do this but he sounds irresponsible! He gives you Ativan and then doesn't tell you how to take it! GEEZ!

Firstly, I've never heard the term "taper off alcohol".

If you go in to withdrawal every day that's all the more reason you need to be detoxed in a medical setting where they know how to replace the alcohol with benzos and keep you safe.

There aren't any doctors here and any info you receive is purely anecdotal. I doubt anyone will go out on this limb...

You need professional care for this and don't think for a second that you can do this at home. It's too dangerous. Make some calls please....

Day 8 for me, low energy and some pain here abnd there. I guess I ahve been drinking for regular for about 12 years, drank on weekend only before that. Age 47 now. Have stopped several times over the past 3 or 4 years. Did 42 days in August/Sept 2011. Then started again....sometime drank 3 or 4 beer in an evening, other times more and other booze, Whysky...1/2 a 26oz would be normal. I find my energy level lower this time than other time of stoppage. My goal is 90 days then will make a final choice....to drink or not ot drink. I never understood the social drinker, so I think that's not for me. Well, that my little story. Good luck to everyone.

Detox should be done under medical supervision but I guess you already know this.
Detox is a small part of getting and staying sober so after you detox what do you plan to do?

I wish I had some answers for you. You should be commended for seeing your struggles and wanting to correct it. I was thinking besides getting another Dr. opinion, if you read up on the Alcoholism addiction forum. They may be able to give you better insight into what to expect? You are very brave for posting. I know you will kick this!

yeah...this was kind of a stupid move your doctor. NO directions is more of a liability than to give the WRONG directions, and to be honest i can't believe a pharmacy filled it...especially being a controlled substance.

there are other drugs that are more commonly used for withdrawal, also. chlordiazepoxide... even chloral hydrate....ativan isn't generally preferred.

you seem to have done this many times. have you never done this before? i don't mean for you to answer...but i wouldn't think your dr could prescribe you these without any directions without a little trust that you had done this before and got an idea of what you're doing. if he did, then he's an idiot. i don't know what to suggest...because i hate to say 'keep drinking till you get a second opinion'....but i also don't know the extent of your alcoholism and i would hate to say just take a guess at things. i would call your dr in the morning and demand at least verbal instruction on what to do. first thing! tell him you aren't interested in who's toes he treds on...you just need to know how to take the darn things!

best of luck...i hope this one sticks for ya!

I understand the dangers. I have been through several detoxes- more than 10- and that is why I asked for a taper when I saw the doctor. He said that he did not want to "tread on the feet' of the addictions specialists, so he would not write me a taper, per se. He did, however, give me a R/x  so that I could do this myself. I am looking for specific instructions on how often to take the medication. I drink every day and experience withdraw in the mornings. Looking for instructions, please.

Detoxing from alcohol needs to be done under medical supervision. It's dangerous to do it at home and alone. Please see a doctor.
