Stomach is a mess!

I Have IBS and Acid reflux.  I get this pain in my upper right and left side of my stomach, lots of rumbling and acidy.  Ugh!  I have severe anxiety/panic disorder.  Something happened to my family and it was very upsetting.. on top of already having these issues, my anxiety went somewhere where I never ever have been before..
Can anxiety cause these things?  My stomach hurts, its acidy, rumbling but I can't go?  Feel like I have the flu, no appetite, and nausea... ugh... read where anxiety can cause some extreme things.?!

Often these symptoms are side effects of antidepressants, so there's that as well.  Some constipate, some cause diarrhea.  Part of the reason for this is they seem to affect magnesium levels, which helps us go, and is also why muscle cramps are often a side effect of these meds.  The second reason is that they affect serotonin, and most of the serotonin in the body is used in the digestive system and to relax muscles and blood vessels.  A magnesium supplement might therefore help.  You also might try some aloe vera juice or DGL and see if that helps.  Peppermint enteric coated capsules can also be helpful for some of your symptoms.  I'd stay away from meds for this problem, since they repress acid; that just causes your stomach to produce more in what's called the rebound effect since your stomach must produce acid to digest protein and absorb minerals.  Anxiety does mess with digestion, so look to your diet as well -- things you could digest before you might not be able to now because of your anxiety.  Just don't fall into the trap of piling med upon med; some of this stuff you have to solve naturally to minimize side effects that each med adds to your burden.  Good luck.

Hi again jojokds.

To simplify matters I will just give you one or two recommendations
at a time, to explore.

1.  Dr. Coca's Pulse Test - free download -  will indicate within a week,
any reactivity, any allergies, any intolerance and sensitivity to anything ingested, that is considered offensive by the immune system.
It is a great self-test, for the degree of accuracy, however, should you find it too difficult to do because of your schedule, there's a simplified version that I can send you, as second option.

Never mind; It takes just an extra minute. Here it is:

Dr. Cocoa's Pulse Test (simplified version)

Just sit in a chair and come to a rest for about 5 minutes.
Take your pulse for a full 1 minute (not the 15 sec. multiply by 4 thing).  Then put whatever you want to test in your mouth and chew it for 30 seconds.
Then take your pulse again.
If you find it is faster by 6 beats, you are allergic or have a sensitivity to it.    If you have type “O” blood, use 4 beats as the criteria instead of 6. It’s that simple.

2. Your shallow breathing is resulting in insufficient respiration.
This alone has many potential adverse health consequences.
Go to the Normal Breathing website for details.
Have you heard of the Buteyko Breathing Technique?
You can retrain your brain to breath properly, doing some simple breathing exercises and practising.
Over time the brain picks the new breathing pattern and proper breathing becomes a subconscious function (automatically)!
It is a wonderful way to help reduce  anxiety/panic attacks, alleviate  Asthma symptoms and more.
Personally, I do Pranayama Yoga Breathing for Meditation and wellness, called "Bhramari" which is an advanced level breathing technique.
It is simply blissful!
If you're interested in this field of natural health, please start with beginner
level exercises. Do not let any fast positive results influence you, to move to more advanced level exercises too soon.
Easy does it! Take your time and learn well, before moving on.

Please post again with any comments and /or any questions.

Cheers!
Niko

Thanks..  Oh I wish I could share some of the things we are going thru right now, it would show why I am so stressed!  My anxiety is so severe, I have been to the ER a few times.  So of course when your like this, it does cause physical symptoms .  I know that but my mind tells me its something bad like cancer and then I am convinced of it.. I have a appt. with my GI early October.  I see him once a year.  Due for my usual tests... I would love to have one damn day that I didn't have so much anxiety and these awful panic attacks!

You have a lot going on.  You need to reach out for some help, in the form of therapy, or the like.

With these kinds of issues, it's hard to say what caused what, as they most definitely excerbate one another.  You know your anxiety is off the charts, I think that's a reasonable starting place.

In the meantime, follow up with a GI doc about the other issues.  There's many things they xcan recommend temporarily to help your symptoms, while you work to bring your anxiety under control.

Hey jojokdz.

You may have IBS, Leaky Gut Syndrome, Acid reflux + Anxiety, Depression and Panic Attacks.

Have you ever heard of GAPS or GAP Syndrome?

This condition establishes a strong link between the the digestive system (including the G/I system) and the brain.
And if this has not been an underlying cause of your issues in the past, it  may well be a condition presently that is keeping you in this vicious cycle.

You may have an organic aspect of anxiety/panic disorder/depression
linked to IBS and Acid Reflux symptoms, however, if you look into GAPS,
you will find that there may be many more connections, involving and affecting various systems  and organs of your body.

Conventional medicine likes to treat conditions based on the isolated parts of us where the symptoms mostly manifest, without necessarily looking into the possible connections and getting to the root of the problems.
I guess that takes too much time. lol!

We are complex multi-functional beings with an intelligent operating system
that keeps the delicate balance of all its intricate and interconnected components. And when the balance is off, we (including our health professionals) need to take the time to restore this balance carefully.

You are blessed to have 2 great health care professionals to take care of you! This is so refreshing and encouraging.

Having said all that, there are many things that can be done to improve
your condition dramatically!
I can offer you some holistic suggestions, if you're interested to pursue something complimentary along with your present treatment, in your quest for wellness.
My motto is "I'm reasonable. I expect Miracles!"

Take care!
Niko

This post is several years old.  I suggest making a new post so you get more help.  Also, when you make your new post, be more thorough in describing what's going on and what you've done to treat it.

Thanks for the responses.. I am seeing a lady who is amazing in dealing with anxiety/panic disorders.  We are working on my issues.  I am taking a antidepressant.  I also am seeing a nutrionist who is helping me eating  healthier.  I am honestly trying.  I am a Hypochondriac.. I also think I have something wrong.. There are days I think of this all day long.  When things get bad, it usually sends me to the bathroom, not being able to go is something new. Do have alot on my plate, so stress is a way of life for me.  I am trying to make it not a everyday thing.. Just feel like this is a bad dream.. and wish my stomach would settle down..

Hello and welcome to our forum!

"... I am under care for severe anxiety disorder/depression/panic."

There's your answer right there.  I'm sure you know that these disorders can wreak havoc on your GI system, right?  Anxiety causes a major increase in GI motility, which causes an increase in acid production, all KINDS of things.  The answer to this is to get the anxiety to a more manaageable place.

What kinds of treatments for anxiety have you tried in the past?  You need to talk to your doctor for sure.
