Antidepressants!?

Went in to my GP today to get another script for valium which I take for my anxiety. But he now insists that I get rid of the valium and restart an antidepressant.I told him I have had bad side effects from these drugs but he insists I take an AD.In the past they did nothing for my anxiety, they just magnified it!he is still adamant I take the medication but I insisted on saying NO.He then told me to leave his office since I was not prepared to take his advice.I just cannot understand why most doctors prescribe AD medication for anxiety, believing it is a mgic cure.In my case they have been a nightmare. It seems that most doctors are in bed with the drug companies, that make ADs!Oh and I noticed all the pens and stationary items on his desk supplied by the manufacturers of these drugs.I was his patient for 10yrs,and he made me feel really bad.It was either his way or the highway!Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thank you for replying.I may seek out another doctor and try this drug that you have suggested. Its true, the valium is only masking the anxiety.Maybe the Endep will help?I recall several years ago trying tofranil, and it did seem to help somewhat. Is Endep similar to tofranil? Thanks again, and Merry Xmas.

I had very bad experience using SSRI antidepressants.  Thankfully my Dr. listened to me and approved of my request to go onto another type of medication, which I believe is much  kinder to the system.  Perhaps you could discuss with him the use of amitriptyline sometimes know as Elavil (??) not sure if I spelt it right mine is called Endep.  This type of medication is much older and while it does work on the chemical imbalance in the brain it does so in a different way.  I cant tell you the difference it has made to me.  I have only been on it 8 days and already I am functioning a lot more effectively.  Check it out on Google you will also get the right spelling there.  In a post on this site I did one called Good Medication, and Ryan who answers a lot of post especially regarding med, posted a great reply.  See if you can find it was probably a week ago.  Perhaps if you get a new doctor you can also discuss that all the valium is doing is sedating the anxiety problems, it is not helping your body to actually do any chemical healing.  This needs to happen which is the main reason I agreed to take any medication at all, plus I am seeing a Psychologist and using breathing and relaxation techniques.  Hope some of this helps.  God Bless you in your healing journey.
