anxiety

Hi, I recently was sent to the ER by my physican due to a  reaction I was having from my celexa. I was having extreme anxiety, high blood pressure, sweating, tremors, shaking, etc. They had me stop the celexa. My doctor had me start Zoloft. I have been on it for six days and some of the same symptoms are starting again plus muscle tightness in the chest and throat. She told me to stop the zoloft. I asked if I should titrate it, but I was told to just stop it. She wants me to start seeing a Psychiatrist for my meds. I agree, but I am worried about any withdrawls I may have from stopping the med like that.

I had the same problem with Citalopram (Celaxa). The same symptoms after 2 doses of 10mg. The shaking was so bad I had trouble talking (stuttering), and suicidal thoughts. My doctor took me off them immediatley. I am not talking any meds and it took 5 days for the symptoms to go down to being manageable.
I am on Prilosec which I believe interacted with this drug. The doc said no but I found on wikipedia it states ....
"When taken with Prilosec, the clearance of citalopram may be reduced, leading to higher blood levels of citalopram. Prilosec inhibits the CYP450 2C19 enzyme, one of the two primary enzymes responsible for the metabolism of citalopram. Dosage adjustments may be needed due to this effect."

Hello there,

You used Zoloft for only 6 days so i wouldn't be concerned that much about withdrawal symptoms and surely your doctor would have make you taper off slowly but because of you bad reaction it is better to stop now.

There are other ADs you can try such as the SNRIs ( Cymbalta, Effexor ) or more GABA specific drugs like Lyrica or Neurotin. You must know one thing tho is that it takes time for the medication to take effect. It might take a month until you can see some improvements and you will have side effects because your body needs to adapt . Common side effect when starting are nausea and dizziness. High blood pressure, sweating, tremors, shaking are definitely a bad reactions and might also occur with a SNRI. You can try but i think this bad reaction can be avoided with Lyrica or Neurotin but who knows, you could have a bad reaction too but they mechanisms of action are totally different from the SNRIs and SSRIs.

Please consider that I'm not a doctor nor a pharmacist and those issues must be discussed with you doctor.

Best regards,
M4
