Kermit, I think you're thinking of another medication. Lyrica is not used in that manner. Lyrica is used to treat different kinds of pain...like those related to fibromyalgia, and other Neurological related conditions. You may be thinking of Lithium?
Sean, a few things...., you definitely need to verbalize all of the above to your therapist first. Explain that you feel that you don't have proper coping mechanisms to use in those really rough moments. The therapist is the one who will help you with that, not your doctor. Most psychiatrists these days really only deal with the medication aspect of treatment.
Also, please don't EVER take more of your medication than you're prescribed, unless it's been okay'ed by the prescribing doctor. That's how people run into different issues, especially with a medication like Xanax, which can cause dependency, tolerance, and addiction. That's just never a good habit to get into.
You can ask your doctor if you can take your Xanax under the tongue (sublingually). It is an approved route of administration, and the onset of action is a good bit faster when taken that way, versus orally. PLUS, that would be more ideal, with your pill swallowing problems.
Keep the lines of communication open with your team about how you're feeling. Update us when you can!
