Why do I panic when driving certain places?

I have anxiety attacks when I drive alone in the car if I am driving up or down a mountain road, or if I am where there are no houses or people around. It also can happen on thruways where there are no other cars around me. I have a sense that I am alone in the world.

You have developed a phobia problem.  There's probably no explanation for it.  I would look for a psychologist who practices a form of therapy called CBT as soon as possible which will hopefully teach you tools to overcome this.  I would do it soon because phobias have a tendency in many people to start spreading as you start avoiding the things that trigger the anxiety.  I've had this problem for a long time, and for most of us who do there really is no rational explanation either for why it exists or why the things that trigger it do it and other things don't.  Just one of those random things in life.

I have suffered different forms of this phobia most of my life and have seen therapists on and off most of my life. Some of the time they are worse than other times. They hold me back from doing a lot of things that require travel even though I love traveling. I am going to be seeing a new therapist and I will see if he practices CBT. And if he doesn't, maybe he can recommend someone. Thank you.
