Sounds like you are having panic attacks. I am very familiar with these. You may also have an anxiety disorder, and yes see a psychologist.
The other thing about the psychologist. Ask if he knows cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It's a practical way to deal with anxiety and teach you how to understand how you respond to "hard" situations and some insight to your anxiety and how you respond to it that undermines you, and focuses on coping and thinking better. For the last few years, it's been incorporated in inpatient and outpatient programs. It's much better and more developed than it used to be more than a decade ago. If you haven't tried meditation, and there are many ways you can meditate, that I find helpful too. I do a walking meditation as well as just sitting down besides the usual lotus position. It seems like a hard thing to do at first, but actually it is pretty easy once you get the hang of it, I personally think prayer is a type of meditation, especially when it is done without thinking about words but reaching out. Even a couple of minutes of a meditative technique is worthwhile. I do it a lot to clear my head before I think about things or problem solve. The brain is a jumbled marvel, and it's actually pretty fast.
I liked this short article webpage with instructional video on understanding benign vertigo and the 2 manuevers. It is from University of Colorado School of Medicine. www.ucdenver.edu/.../two-home-exercises-treat-vertigo.aspx
It could be anxiety related with the lightheadedness, dizziness and clammy feeling. I had Benign Paroxysmal Positional vertigo, and if the episode can't be repeated or caused to happen in a medical exam, it doesn't necessarily mean you didn't experience it. An ENT dr (Ear, Nose, & Throat) would be helpful to you because they understand inner ear problems better than most people and they can teach you exercises that can stop the vertigo. I learned one from a neurologist who just happened to know about it, so I was lucky he had that tidbit of info. I liked it because i could stop the falling sensation and spinning, As soon as the spinning started, I turned my head quickly (Sorry, I can't remember if it was against or with the direction of the spin), and it stopped the spinning. I liked it because it worked and I culd do it standing up. There are UTube videos (informative and instructional) on usual cause of vertigo (there are a number of causes) and what consitions cause them. They teach you 2 exercise manuevers to stop vertigo. They are the Epley maneuver and the Half Somersault Maneuver. I didn't try very hard to look up the simple one I knew, but you may chance upon it if you look it up yourself,
I also had the dizzy, lightheaded feeling wothout the spinning, which is not vertigo, but basically from orthostatic hypotension, which was caused by a medication notorious for that, and, at one time, because I was workng under extreme stress and dodn't drink enough water (dehydration) and I had low blood sugar. That can easily be diagnosed with takng blood pressure and pulse during lying down, sitting and standing (in both arms). Sinc I didn't have a manometer attached to me at the time, and ithe dizziness happened when I rose from getting up from a chair to quickly, I just lied down until the dizziess passed (preferably with head lower than chest position and legs raised up sne, , started to get up very slowly to sitting, then very slowly to standing. Drank a few glasses of water and chewed on whatever food I had available. You can also get dehydrated from drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, exercising hard and sweating and nt drinking enough fluid, or meds like blood pressure, heart meds and a few psych meds, to name a few.
Disconcerting, worrisome when it happens, and feels horrible, but fixable, either mentally or physically driven. I just made sure I was safe with climbing stairs, driving or handling machinery or tools like chainsaws:) It's been awhile since I felt the vertigo, orthostatic hypotension or dizziness, loss of balance. Drinking enough fluids and eating helps.
