Why do I wake up a lot during the night?

I am 24, 5'8, and 164lbs. I relocated to a new city for a job. I was sleeping normal about 8-9 hours a sleep up until a week ago. Out of nowhere I woke up in the middle of the night and was unable to go to sleep. This electrical surge or sensation would wake me up right when I am about to fall asleep. After doing research and talking to my doctor, I trained myself to accept it. Just three days ago I was finally able to fall asleep within 15 minutes, but would find myself waking up every hour like 6-10 times a night. I'm still sleepy and able to fall asleep when that happens but I'm aware that I am awake. What could it be? I'm not on any medication or diagnose with anything yet.
