INDERAL AND ANXIETY

by UVLDAYS, Jan 08, 2007 12:00AM
RECENTLY THE MAKERS OF INDERAL 10MG BRAND "WYETH AYERTH" DECIDED IT TO NO LONGER MAKE IT. I HAVE BEEN ON THIS MEDICATION FOR OVER 20 YRS AND WAS TOLD NOT TO JUST STOP TAKING THE MEDICATION.  BY THE WAY I WAS TAKING THIS MEDICATION FOR PALPITATIONS/RAPID HEART BEAT/ANXIETY.  HAS ANYONE BEEN THROUGH THIS AND WHAT KIND OF MEDICATION WERE YOU PRESCRIBED TO REPLACE THE INDERAL. ALSO MY DOCTOR WANTS ME TO TRY TROPAL A BETA BLOCKER BUT I AM NOT SURE ABOUT IT SINCE MY BLOOD PRESSSURE AND HEART RATE ARE FINE AND AT TIMES A LITTLE LOW.

Hi UV,
Inderal, like Toprol, is a beta-blocker.  You were told right,  you definately do not want to just stop taking a beta-blocker.  I take Toprol XL for the exact same symptoms you have, rapid heart beat, palpitations and anxiety.  I've been on it a month.  Seems to help.  You might want to listen to your doctor and give the Toprol a try.

Me too.  Toprol XL, 25 mg every day. Doc said if 25 mg doesn't do it,  I can take 25 in the a.m. and 25 in the p.m., too (and sometimes I might if my heart is beating really hard).  I've been on a betablocker for about two decades.  Started out with Inderal  10 mg 3 times a day  (took it for probably 10 or 12 years).  Have been on Toprol now for probably close to 7 years.  Definitely, don't just run out of the Inderal and then stop.  You cannot do that with a betablocker.  Toprol works just as well for me.  Made me a little more tired in the beginning, I think, but whew - can I ever tell when I have not had my a.m. dose.  I don't EVER want to be stranded somewhere without my Toprol, and so I keep some it in pocketbook, in my car, in the boat, in my son's house, etc.  (just never know :)  Best of luck.

Thanks scardee and chnme for your comments regarding inderal and tropal.  few days after i posted the comment doctor gave me a prescription for Inderal 40mg and advised me to cut it into 4ths.  well i did and weird thing was i got an anxious feeling that wore off after awhile.I didn't like that.  i wondered if tropal 25 mg has any effects like that. do you know? or what was  your experience first time you took it? and how many hours does one have to wait before you can switch from inderal to topral.

Be sure and ask your doc, but as I recall I switched immediately (it's been so long I've forgotten about the switch but recall it was right away.)  I can take it 25 mg once a day  (half of a 50 mg tablet) or if I need to I can take 25 mg up to twice a day (every 12 hours).  I can usually do with 25 mg a day but will occasionally need to take another 25 mg at night (very rarely.)  The only thing I noticed in the beginning was feeling extra tired, but I got used to it  (typical side effect of it.)

When the cardiac doc gives you the all clear to switch over Toprol completely, you can do it.  I'm totally fine on it and wouldn't want to be without it.  If I happen to miss my morning dose, I can tell it by around 2 or 3 in the afternoon,  and I'll just take a 25 mg then.  If you're on 10 mg of Inderal 4 x a day, 25 mg Toprol might do fine for you.  50 mg in the very beginning will make you tired, probably, but like I say - you will get used to it and might find you can do with 25 mg.   Ask your doc.  Best wishes.
