I took Lexapro for about nine months.  The first day I took it I felt weird within 20 minutes.  I had a horrible headache and then just felt weird.  The next day (actually night, I was taking them at around 6pm) I felt worse.  It felt like my head was going from side to side in warp speed.  I felt shaky and just plain crappy.  My doc told me to 1/2 the dose (I started with 10).  The third day I took 5, still a headache and off balance.  By this time I had read more online (which is good and BAD) and was "comforted" by the fact that I was reading a lot of the same symptoms happening to other people.

My pharmacist and close friend told me that these symptoms can last for up to 14 days.  I just cried and cried.  I couldn't function!!  But honestly, after the 8th day I felt okay.  I stayed at 5mg for six weeks because I was afraid to go to 10.  I was scared of the same thing happening.  But it didn't.  I didn't have one more problem the rest of the time I was on it.  I've read a lot about insomnia, weight gain and all that stuff.  I didn't have that.  Everyone reacts to meds different.  I am pretty sensitive to all meds so I think that is why I had a hard time going on it.  I know two other people on it and one of them was at 20mg, neither one of them have had ANY problems on it.

I think you do what is best for you and be very cautious about reading too much or going by someone else's experience.  Yours can vary greatly.

Good luck to you!!!

I took it once and had an adverse reaction (vomiting, dry heaves).  It's apparently very, very rare to react to it the way I did.  In case you're as unlucky as I am I'll explain exactly what happened:

Took the med with a small amount of food.  Felt fine for several hours.  Suddenly I felt strange, warm sensations under my armpits, then nausea.  It was a strange nausea in that I'd feel fine for a few seconds and then extremely ill.  After about 25 minutes I started dry heaving.  Went through that twice over the course of another half hour and then felt normal again.  Went to bed and woke up with no more complications.  (and never took it again, obviously).

So even if you do react like that, maybe that's about as bad as it gets.  A small dose probably wouldn't be enough to do much more.  In fact, the doctor didn't think the Lexapro was even the cause.  Nausea is a side effect but I simply didn't have very much in my body at that point.  My anxiety probably made it worse than it would've been otherwise.

I have been taking 20 mg a day for about 2 1/2 years now. I have only one complaint-for me it's weight gain. Other than that it's awesome as I tried effexor xl and on day one had a 4 hour full blown panic attack. Never had anything like that before. I guess it all depends on what is going on in your system. I take lexapro on an empty stomach sometimes and it doesn't bother me at all. As for the period thing, mine were every two weeks(still working on that one) for 4 years before starting on it and now they are still the same. I read somewhere that it works somehow to thin blood as ibuprofen and not to use the two much together. I do occasionally as I get migraines.  I have slept much better on it. Not real tired. Couldn't really tell that I started on it because the changes were so subtle. I have way less pms symptoms now. Best of luck to you!
