You don't state, specifically, how long you've been on the duloxetine, (Cymbalta). But it can take anywhere from one to four weeks, sometimes longer, for this med to reach therapeutic levels and for you to begin to notice some improvement. If it hasn't been this long, give it some more time, but I'd not let it go much over 6 weeks before getting back with my doctor. Finding the right antidepressant can be a real trial and error ordeal, but stick with it.
While Xanax is an excellent medication for anxiety/panic states, you must be extremely careful with this drug. You should be on the lowest dose possible that will control your panic, and you should be on it for no longer than four months. If you are using this medication on a prn (as needed) basis, then this warning is not as urgent, but if you're taking it daily, please speak with your doctor about trying you on a longer acting benzo like Klonopin for the anxiety. It is every bit as effective as Xanax, but does not carry as many risks. Bear in mind that both of these drugs, if taken for long periods of time, must be tapered...........you cannot simply just stop taking either of these medications. But this is something your doctor should discuss with you in detail and the two of you, together, should decide which would be the better choice for you.
Also give some thought to getting into therapy to get to the root of your depression and anxiety. While the medications will help you deal with the symptoms, they will not "cure" the underlying cause. And that is what you must do to recover.
