I have discontinued using Xanax for sleep at night which I had done for many years.  Without taking Xanax I have great difficulty getting any sleep at night.  I realize Xanax is not a sleeping pill.  Is it better in your opinion to use Ambien, Lunesta or any of these that are sleeping aids?  How does one with insominia difficulties get reasonable sleep when withdrawing from these meds?  Thanks and nice to see you around again.

No, as the sleep aids are comparable in action to the Benzodiazepines, and carry the same risks (ie: rebound insomnia, tolerance, dependency).

Perhaps the best approach is to do nothing at all, and give your body a chance to readjust. If this proves to be too difficult, you could inquire about the drug Trazodone. Trazodone is a Tetracyclic Antidepressant that is commonly used for insomnia.
