SSRI for anxiety

I have been recently diagnosised with IBS from stress anxiety.  Since the IBS was getting worse, the doctor placed me on a SSRI, only for a short time she said to help with the anxiety.  Of course, I just started it yesterday and I wasn't able to sleep well, and I felt myself get all jittery inside.  Is this normal I am on Celexa?   Also, I am just worried by taking a SSRI for a short amount of time, that this may actually cause some form of depression.  Does anyone know anything about this?

I am having such a delima with all these drugs.  I have tried several many years ago and had bad side effects.  I am suffering with anxiety and crying alot right now.  But, I don't want to take anything.  I do take Xanax and Lorazapam when I an in need.  But, I don't want to have to depend on those everyday.  I wish I knew what was causing me to feel this way.  I feel like I am crying because of the anxiety.  I am scared and feel like there is no hope of getting through this since I am not sure what is causing this.  I am seeing a phys. starting tomorrow.  I hope that is the key!

I take my Efexor in the mornings and sleep fine.  I'm only on 37.5 mg, but have found when I take them in the evenings, I too couldn't sleep and would just lay there wide awake by 2am.  I does take awhile for your body to get used to them, as I was very tired for a few weeks, but you'll adjust to them eventually.  As far as feeling more depressed, I tried Lexapro 10mg for a month and had HORRIBLE depression & even suicidal thoughts. I called my doc last Friday and insisted she put me back on the Ephexor. She was just going to add Remeron, but I insisted that I wanted off the Lexapro immediately. I had post-partum depression 7 yrs ago when my daughter was born & was on the Remeron & didn't care for it either; plus, I didn't even have suicidal thoughts when I had the PP depression, so I knew that it was the Lexapro, and now, after only taking my 4th day again on the Efexor, I feel soooo much better and not down at all.  I also just read a book from the library on natural remedies, and have ordered a few of them from Vitamin World to try. Some of them are a vitamin B complex w/ all 11 b's in it, St Johns Wort, Sam-e, and many others. I figured if these work for me, maybe I can get off the prescriptions all together....

SSRI's are used for depression and for generalized anxiety as well as social anxiety.  It takes 2-3 weeks to get the effects of the drug.  Often, in the beginning of taking an SSRI, you may get more anxiety and other things like not sleeping well etc.  In other words, makes you feel worse than you did before (at times)...however, in the long run it ususally makes you feel better.  I would not say it would cause depression, but I know that all SSRI's have withdrawal effects and are NOT easy to come off of.  Usually you will get more symptoms coming off as when you are going on.  If you do not have extreme symptoms, I would check into alternative ideas to combat the anxiety because of withdrawal.  Especially being it is only for a short period of time.  I have been on Paxil for 12 years and have heard horror stories about coming off...I am terrified to even try it.  PLEASE weigh all your options and thoroughly discuss this with your doctor.
