The one thing missing from your discussion of the psychiatric intervention-and I believe it is the ESSENTIAL thing- is THERAPY. The beauty of a shrink is that he/she can prescribe and monitor the meds while doing therapy -talk therapy, behavior modification, whatever.
The drugs won't cure. What they do is help you "settle," help you cope so you can have some relief from the symptoms. Ideally, you'll use that opportunity to start digging down into whatever prime movers may be at work to make you edgy and anxious. It can be a lengthy mission -but it is one well worth undertaking because in the end, you get to feel better all on your own.
The people here can be a very credible part of that therapy, not just because they have have had the same experiences as you -but also because a great many have learned to cope and can share enormous insights. That's why we're here: to get and give help. Why not join? Beleive it or not, it won't be long before you read a post from someone who really needs to hear from you. We're glad you're here.
hi yes ativan is very good for short term use, I was put on ativan over 30years ago and left on them in the 70tsh they were hailed as a wonder drug and non additive how wrong they were, just go back to see your doctor if your not happy with the drugs your on. I also suffer terrible tightness and crampings in my upper abderman and it goes into my back but the docs insist its my anxiety, how does it affect digestive/stomach.
take care.
No Pelf, you don't want Xanax or Ativan because they are short acting benzos and will only make your anxiety worse. A better benzo would be the long acting Klonopin or Valium. I have been where you are and it's easy to not care about tolerance when you feel so desperate, but in the future you will wonder how you could have made such a bad mistake because your anxiety will only get worse with Xanax or Ativan. Those two drugs are intended for occasional use only! I don't know about all three ADs, but it seems like alot and if they're not working then let your doctor know right away.
Best of luck
