Seroquel XR

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with dosage times for Seroquel XR.

I'm currently breastfeeding my 9 week old baby while taking this medication for anxiety and am trying to manage the sedating effects.

I have started on 50mg but am to increase to 100mg this week. My GP was not confident in saying whether I would be better to take 50mg twice daily, or 100mg once.

Does anyone have any recommendations on this? I have had great success with treating my anxiety with Seroquel (IR) in the past and am really hoping that I can make it compatible with my breastfeeding.

Also, can anyone please advise if I should be waiting after dosing before feeding my son? I have been trying to hold off for 2 hours after dosing to skip the peak concentration time, but am wondering if this is necessary.

My recommendation is to not breast feed while taking this medication. In fairness there is no hard knowledge of potential damage to your child, however there is an element of risk. Either stop the medication while you breast feed or stop the breast feeding.

I have checked today with the doctor about the waiting after dosino. I know that was more a question for a doctor and shouldn't have been asked here. I'm more just after personal opinions on whether people found it better to take XR once or twice a day.

Thank you, yes I have checked, medication was not a decision I took lightly. I spoke to my GP, consulted Dr Thomas Hale's book "Medications and Mother's Milk" (the latest edition), and spoke to the people at the Monash University centre that specializes in drugs and breastfeeding information. It's considered one of the 'more compatible' drugs for breastfeeding, mostly due to the fact that it doesn't enter breastmilk well. Weight-adjusted infant dose is estimated at only around 0.45% of maternal dose.

Are you certain this drug is safe at any time to pass on to a child?  It's an antipsychotic that has the unwanted side effect of being sedating, so it was marketed illegally for that purpose.  It is perfectly legal for your doctor to prescribe it for that purpose, however, so that's not the issue here, the issue is the strong effect this drug has.  Have you spoken with a psychiatrist and your obstetrician to make sure?
