What could it be

I've had mild anxiety for a long time and some mild depression. I posted a few days ago that this past week has been especially bad. I feel anxious/scared even though there is nothing to be scared of. Worried even though there is nothing to worry about. I go into crying fits. I can't seem to stop having panic attacks either. My husband says it's because I drink too much but I've had episodes like this in my life even before I drank. I've never been tecnically diagnosed with anything.

So the Ativan was prescribed by your personal physician?

You have a husband who can help.  A visit to a psychiatrist is in order.  What you describe as mild depression and anxiety includes panic attacks????  That is not a mild case of nerves you've got.

You may have an excellent relationship with your personal physicial: if so, start with a visit to his/her office.  But for the best care, you need the services of a psychiatrist.

The drinking is ....as you already know.....a way to self medicate.  Lots of people do this.  Maybe you will continue, if you don't want to see doctor.  But it sounds as though you are ready to face your anxiety problems .   Do hope you will.   Best.
