What can I do?

I was perscribed Ativan by my doctor but she was really against giving them 2 me because she has a biased opinion of benzodiazapines. I have really bad anxiety and I don't feel like the Ativan has any effect on me. Is it possible to get a perscription elsewhere for Xanex to c if it has a better effect on my anxiety?

Xanax can be extremely addictive.I would stay clear of it and use something like valium or klonopin, that Ryan suggests. These have worked for me and are not as addictive as xanax. They have a longer half life and are generally easier to taper off.I know personally how dangerous xanax can be when used long term!Ativan is the same as xanax, very addictive if used long term.I agree with JSGeare, that before you take medication ,give talk therapy a go and see how you feel.Best of luck.

Benzos can be dangerous, they say, because they can create physical addiction. But then, again, everyone's different -my first prescription from my dr for my anxiety was Xanax, and I HATED it, because it basically knocked me out. Addicted? I don't think so! However, there are many people who have found Xanax helpful. I think that if used correctly and as prescribed, it might help.

I don't know Ativan, but there are many meds that work great for some people and do nothing (or even feel bad) to others. First I would talk to my doctor, tell her that that medication isn't helping any and ask if you could try something else. Even if it's not a benzo, your doctor might come up with something that works for you. If you really really want to try benzos, though, it looks like seeing a new doctor would be the only way. But be careful -medications are supposed to be prescribed as the most fitting for the patient, so make sure not to medicate yourself and not buy stuff without a prescription.

I'm not sure, missgina, why you are uneasy about a doctor's opinion -and a biased opinion is the only kind I know of. It sounds to me as though you are dangerously close to self-medicating, as opposed to taking care of the problem. Drugs are an important part of taking care of panic symptoms, and if you experience panic only situationally (flying, for example) and then but rarely, they may be fine to use exclusively. But if what you REALLY want is to treat the panic or the anxiety, that nagging uneasiness, that sudden inrush of fear, then what you probably need is TREATMENT, and that probably means at least a few sessions of talk therapy. Please consider it.
