Xanax asking a doctor for a greater dose

I recently was sent to a Psychiatrist after visiting the emergency room several times over a year period thinking that I was having a heart attack. The pain was exactly what I thought a heart attack would be like but symptoms left after about a hour. I was told that I was having panick attacks that some people assume are heart attacks. I was given 1 mg of xanax and was told to take half a pill at first and then if that did not have a effect to take a whole pill. I did this and half a pill did nothing and the whole pill to be honest I am not sure it had any effect either. I am having two or three major panick attacks a week and probably 3 to 5 minor ones. It is getting to the point that I am afraid to drive or leave my house. I am wondering what is the best way to approach this doctor about increasing the dose to level that will stop my attacks without seeming like a drug seeking person. I have never had a drug or alcohol issue and I really want this anxiety to stop, it seems that if I start thinking about having a attack or worrying about having one in public I will have one, which starts a very bad process for me because I really am starting to just stay in my home. I am missing more work and my college classes are suffering. Any comments are welcome, thanks

I am glad you offered comment, I assure you I have never abuse or taken any illegal or legal drugs. I also said that the first dose did nothing the whole pill did help a little I did sleep better, and I really see no point on coming here and lying so to answer your question...........NO there is nothing more to the story. I was open and completely honest. MIchael

Honestly, I would rather have a Dr. that is not wanting to give you xanax!
I really do not know your history, you say no drug or alcohol abuse, but I must be honest, when you say the xanax did not do nothing to you (.50mg x 2)  that really makes me think there is more to this story? only because I do not know anyone who has taken xanax that does not feel anything? anyone I know (myself, who knows xanax inside and out) who has taken xanax for the first time or even after a lapse time, feels something? go ask your dr. why and get back to us, really may want to try something that is more effective in the long run for longer periods (24/7) like  a SSRI  considering your saying your having this many attacks.

I agree with No excuses, just be honest with your doctor about the severity of your symptoms.  I do know that most drs dont like to perscribe xanax for too long.  Ativan is little bit longer acting and klonopin is good for long term use.  If the doctor doesnt seem willing to help you, go to a different one.  I've been to several different psychiatrists over the years and it seems like only one of the three knew what they were talking about.  Its kind of like finding a good car mechanic, haha.  Good luck.

I know how the anxiety can affect life trust me. I see that your anxiety is very severe. Tell your doc the truth, how hard it is for you to function on daily basis. I think he will not have any problems to give you higher dosage or differend med, but remember, Xanax is very adictive and you do not want to know the withdrawal symptoms. Ask for xanax xr or klonopin they have longer halflife or some ssri's they are safe and not that addictive. Do you see psychiatrist???? or regular practirioner? Taking meds is not everything, try yoga, meditation, exercise and the most important therapy. Let us know how you doing!!!!
