I think mammo is right. If it's helping you stay with it. If you're honest with your doctor and you trust him/her tell them if it's not helping anymore and they'll wean you off it.
Xanax was one of the first drugs I was prescribed. It scared me too, the "getting addicted" part. I stopped it immediately and the withdrawal symptoms were hell. Don't do that! You won't enjoy it.

The most important thing to think about right now is getting control of your anxiety symptoms and if the Xanax is doing that....don't worry about the "what ifs". When you have an option to take a medication which helps improve your quality of life, you need to do this. Anxiety is like any other medical condition that requires daily medication to control the symptoms. Don't give yourself one more thing to stress out about, enjoy the peace you finally have and if the day comes where you are able to do without the medication your doctor will be able to wean you off of it. Enjoy the calmness, and enjoy living a happier life! Take care.
