cant get to my psychiatrist - need advice immediately

I have extreme anxiety. I started Prozac and the last 4 days I have not slept even a wink. I take the med first thing is the morning, I am taking 10mg, it has made me anxiety so bad to the point I had a panic attack at work that I haven't had in years. My anxiety was so bad I went home from work. I will lose my job at this point.

Are these side effects going to diminish? If so I can take a leave from work for a month and just survive on no sleep, but if they aren't going to dimish then I need to change my meds asap. Ive tried ALOT of meds already, the list is ridiculous. But this study I did at the mental health hospital found based on my dna that I should try Prozac or paxil...my doctor chose Prozac.

What do I do??

Hello

I'm sorry to hear about your anxiety problems. Unfortunately, all meds can have side-effects and prozac was prescribe to you because it's common for doctors to choose this medication. If you feel like this medication is affecting your functionality and you wish to change meds, all you need to do is speak with your doctor and tell him your concerns.

I would also suggest that you don't rely on the medication alone. There are plenty other methods you can choose from to add to your treatment regimens. You should really consider counseling therapy. I know how difficult it is to have a normal functioning life when suffering from anxiety but if you continue with your treatments you'll be okay in no time.

At the end of the day you need to choose what is best for you. Prozac stays in your system for a shorter amount of time than Paxil. Paxil is strong, one of the stronger SSRIs and can be very difficult to get off of. I am taking Paxil and have been for the past 16 years. I started off at 10 mg then 20mg then 40 mg. Paxil has worked for me most of the time in addition to a very low dose of Klonopin both of which I take in the morning. You should not have to suffer. Is your doctor a psychiatrist ? If not see one who understands this type of med. Your doctor may also not be a good fit for you and it might not hurt to change if this one does not listen as you clearly are not having a good reaction to the Prozac.

If you can't get to your psychiatrist within a reasonable amount of time, it may be a good idea to stop by the ER if your anxiety is completely out of control and inhibiting you to function. I would also consider a therapist as well to help find ways for you to cope with your anxiety. Take care, it can get better with time.

Only time will tell if you'll get used to it or not.  That will be true for the side effects of any med you take.  There's no better answer out there.

hi,

No I didn't have panic attacks or sleep problems before I started Prozac. I had anxiety, but the med is completely made me have insomnia to the point I cant even get an hours rest, and its made my anxiety 10 fold. Which probably has a lot to do with not getting any sleep. Ive been taking a sleep aid and still not even a wink.

Did you have similar symptoms before you started the Prozac??? (Panick attacks, not being able to sleep). These are things your doctor would better be able to help you with. I can tell you this though.

10mg is the correct starting dosage and Prozac can take 3-6 weeks to start taking full effect.
