I would suggest you see your OB/GYN and discuss with him/her ALL of your feelings, most especially any thoughts of suicide you've been having.
If you had anxiety before your baby was born, it's possible you now have post-partum despression. If this was the doctor who told you he was sorry and that you had a mental illness, please find yourself a new doctor. This doctor should be brought up on malpractice charges for not helping you get the help you need. If you have a psychiatrist and they aren't helping you either, which is sounds like they aren't, then you need to find a new one of them as well.
Please write to one of our many pregnancy forums here and I'm sure you will get a great deal of support.
You are not being treated well or with the respect you deserve.
I wish you and your new son the very best.
Peace

Nursegirl has given you the best advice possible regarding diazepam. If you feel you need an anti-anxiety medication, the only person qualified to diagnose the type of anxiety you have and make recommendations for treatment is your doctor.
Diazepam does help to control anxiety for some people. But as with any medication, what works for one person, may not work for you. If I am reading your writing correctly, you're asking if it works temporarily and I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. If you take diazepam for 6 months (temorarily) and then want to stop, you can't just simply stop. You MUST taper slowly off this drug. And you must do that under the care and guidance of your doctor.
We cannot tell you which medication would be best for you........there is no "one size fits all," when it comes to psychotropic drugs.
See your doctor
Peace

Did your doctor prescribe the medication?  You are talking about Valium, and in the right contolled setting, under a doctor's guidance, yes, it can be helpful for anxiety.  However, that is a decision that should be left for your treating doc, as many factors play into that choice, your other meds, your history, etc. Valium is habit forming and a controlled substance, so it is nothing to mess around with, outside of a doctor's care.

If you feel you need an anti-anxiety medication, you need to discuss this with your doctor.
