Depending on the type of test you took, when you took it and how your pregnancy was ultimately diagnosed, this may be a case of testing too soon for the HPT to pick up the HCG present in your system. False positives are rare, and usually only happen in a few certain circumstances, but false negatives are more common due to people testing too soon. If you ever are in doubt, the best thing to do in consult your OB/GYN. While they use the same HPT tests that are marketed to the public in most cases, they also have the ability to order a quantitative HCG blood test which is more definitive. A quantitative HCG is also helpful in determining an approximate gestational age/stage of pregnancy.
Hope I helped a bit, please let us know if there is anything we can help you further with. Best of luck with your pregnancy, and congrats!
