Right now my doctor wants me to try to come back to paxil and wean off elavil (i still have panic attacks on it)
Took only 1 dose of paxil 12.5 mg and 10 mg elavil and my symptoms start again, (anxiety, panic attacks)

Is thsi common to have anxiety when starting paxil again?

Given what you're going through and what I've been through, I'd say you quit the Paxil too quickly for you as an individual and you've been suffering withdrawal from it ever since.  Other drugs won't make that go away.  I'm confused a bit, too, because as far as I know, none of these medications are recommended for pregnant women as it's best not to have a child born under the influence of drugs that affect the brain.  So don't see how Lexapro would have been safe, though it would have been less potent than Paxil.  I guess I'd say, go back on the Paxil, and if you really want to quit it, do it much more slowly.  If it takes a year, it takes a year.  You've tried other things and they haven't worked.  I was like you, I was scared of going back on it, and my psychiatrist who took me off it was a quack totally unaware of withdrawal, and this can turn into a long nightmare.  It's possible the Paxil won't work again, it has that reputation, but if it does and all this stuff goes away, you'll definitely know it was Paxil withdrawal.  But of course, the downside is, you'll still be on the stuff, so i understand you might not want to go that route.  It's a tough decision to make.  One theory on protracted withdrawals is to stay away from serotonin affecting drugs in the hope your brain will again learn to do without them, but you've kind of done that by using the elavil.  Don't know what else to say.  You might pick up a couple of books by Joseph Glanville (I hope I have the name right) on proper protocols for tapering safely off these meds.  Believe me, I know what you're going through, unfortunately.

Don't know the timeline here.  Did you quit Paxil successfully, some time ago, without significant withdrawal?  Or did you quit recently and suddenly experience a lot of anxiety different from what you experienced before going on Paxil, which might indicate a withdrawal problem from the Paxil.  Paxil is one of the most difficult meds to stop taking, and after one stops taking it has the reputation of not working again or one has to take a lot more than one took originally to get the same results.  And because it's much stronger in its effects on the brain than other ssris, often moving to another ssri won't help.  At any rate, a timeline might be useful here.  It's possible your doc knows this, which is why he tried a tricyclic.

Hello, this is a cut and paste comment that i think would help you. I can't post websites here, but you could search on Magnesium and anxiety.. the healthier choice for anxiety and panic attacks .

"I have tried everything under the sun for anxiety, herbs, b vitamins, etc.

But nothing has given me as good of a relief as magnesium. I think many people are deficient and not aware of it. Most multi vitamins are under dosed considerably and our soil is depleted so vegetables do not provide the benefits they once did.

Be sure to get a quality magnesium. I was taking a calcium/mag supplement for years but realized the mag in it was oxide (which is lousy).

Good mag supplements are chelated, usually to amino acids taurine or glycine. I personally find best results if taken before bed. "

+++++++
Like he said, Mg Glycinate is a better choice, dosage would be on the bottle.. Mg is not known so much to people as the media does not make a big thing of it.. No money there. But try it. Its inexpensive and will improve your health over all combine with Vit D3 and calcium foods as they help better if being taken together... not necessarily at the same time..
Take care,
