Hi there,

It sounds like it may have started working, when you said that you don't have any more panic attacks?  I mean, I personally would comsider that a definite step in the right direction.

Usually by 4 weeks, most people will have noticed at least a small improvement (which the lack of PA's for you might be that imporvement indeed)....others have had to be on an SSRI for up to 6 weeks to notice changes.  It just depends on the person.

Also, having a higher expectation of a HUGE noticeable change can be discouraging.  It has been, in my experience, a much slower, gradual process.  You may indeed require a higher dose.  I think it might be wise to discuss the progress with your doc, and see what he/she says about it.  Or, you can give it another 2 weeks to see if you notice any more improvement.  The waiting it out a few more weeks is the way *I* would personally go, considering you have had a change in the panic attacks.

Most importantly, if the PA's stopped after a few weeks on the Paxil, I would say that is definite progess.  Try not to get too frustrated that you don't notice earth-shattering changes just yet.  And like another posted said above....the Paxil along WITH talk therapy is usually more successful.  Even if you do NOT do the therapy thing....it still takes some time.  Anxious people are super aware of their feelings as it is...and after starting a med that we so desperately want to work...we can often over-analyze our feelings and symptoms.  Easier said than done...but try not to do that too too much if you can.

Let us know how it goes, and try to hang in there.  You might really be starting to see some changes.  In the end, if not...there are CERTAINLY other options available.  Some people require a few dosage adjustments, or even a change in the type of SSRI before having the outcome that is desirable.

I personally think you seem to be on the right track.  Good luck, and remember to be kind and patient with yourself.  Anxiety is something that takes a while to get under control.

Paxil increased my anxiety and I was on it for several years.  However, I've heard of other people where it took 1 to 2 months to work and really helped them.  I think if it doesn't work in 2 months, then your doctor might have to change meds.

hey there hun!  see, with me the paxil kicked in immediately, and i had no more panic attacks.  what i have is the extra-stimulation from paxil that causes nervousness.  it is s l o w l y going away *sigh*.   is the nervousness what you mean, from the paxil?  or just feeling anxiety period, with or without it?

In my opinion, it can take longer than 4 weeks to feel the full benefits of a full therapeutic dose of an SSRI.  While I am a proponent of these medications, they are by no means a 'cure' or 'magic pill'  However, combined with talk therapy, they are a very useful tool in learning about the anxiety/panic cycle.  In my experience, the best way to deal with this, is to ensure you speak to a therapist that you are comfortable with, and by confronting it, you will gain the knowledge to deal and thrive with this situation.  Keep us posted!
