No I'm not a woman so I don't menstruate and cannot speak from experience, but this is something Lucinda Bassett addressed on her CDs.  It can happen a week before AND/OR after.

My wife doesn't have anxiety problems, but she gets very emotional and sensitive before her periods.  Many women do.  You can try to balance this with natural hormone balancers, or just accept it and demystify it.

*Raises Hand* I do!

I get moody and needy when I'm PMSing. That's the only time that i have to take Valium. And it doesn't work, for the most part.

I absolutely notice worse anxiety immediately before my period. It's a horrible feeling!! My family doctor gave me xanax to help relieve some of the anxiety but I try not to take it too often. I do have those Lucinda Bassett cd's...I'll have to go back & listen to them. My doctor is now going to check my iron, vitamin d & B12 levels...she said they have a big effect on anxiety. Anyone else have any other ideas???

I experience worse symptoms before menstruation too.
The doctor on the mental health expert forum suggested hormone profiles and also suggested a possible psychological link.  This was in response to another members post but I think it possibly also applies to me.
Try researching pmdd.
