side effects from ace inhibitor

side effects from ace inhibitor

I have had a chronic cough since starting ramapril six months ago --  will other ace inhibitors have the same side effect?  If not, is there something to "ease" the cough.  The prescription cough medicine does nothing but the ace inhibitor has been my miracle drug.

ACE inhibitor-induced cough is a common side effect. To determine if a cough is drug induced, withdrawal of the ACE inhibitor for 4 days is recommended. The cough usually resolves within a week but can take up to two weeks. Discuss this with your physician before stopping. Sometimes restarting the medication or switching to another ACE inhibitor will not induce the cough.

Cough suppressants are not effective in this case, and there is no cure. Small studies have shown Cromolyn may help, but the evidence is not conclusive.
