new to this

Very recently found out I have asthma caused by allergies.  I am 55 and never had problems as a child.  I am on blue inhaler and taking signular.  I am having trouble as symptoms come on very fast.  Most annoying is the coughing leads to vomiting very quickly and very difficult to use inhaler once that starts!  Had a very scary morning that I couldn't control breathing, coughing and vomiting enough to take Puffer.   I am using inhaler 2x nightly and usually 2x during day.  Last night was the first night I didn't use my inhaler and I have never gone a day without using Puffer at least once but mostly use my max of 4x a day.  Is this "Normal"?  Is this 'controlled asthma'?  Loss of sleep is starting to affect me and I can't see my Dr. for another 7 weeks.

Your asthma is not under control, and I am concerned about the vomiting, which is probably related to GERDS. A tiny bit of vomit in the trachea is enough to develop a spasm which can completely block the airway. You need to see a physician as soon as possible and the seven week time to appointment is unaceptable.

You should discuss with your physician the purchase of an electric albuterol sulfate inhaler, as well as trying Foradil inhaler.

Follow this breathing technique to help you  in controlling the asthama. Do it for 30 minutes, twice a day, and let me know , when you start to feel the benefit.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Hi,

It sounds like you are really going through a rough time.  Your asthma is definitely not controlled.  Well controlled asthma means that you don't need your inhaler more than twice a week not counting for pretreatment for trigger exposure or exercise.

Could you please be more specific about which inhaler you are on?  Do you only have the "blue" one.  There are several that are blue.  From what you say, I would like to assume that it is Maxair, but there are several other possibilities.  If you do just have a rescue inhaler, you probably need an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and possibly a long acting beta2 agonist (LABA - long acting broncho dilater (similar to a rescue inhaler only they last 12 hours)).  LABA's should only be used in conjunction with an ICS by asthmatics (COPD patients can use them alone).

I hope that helps you some.  Please keep us posted and let us know how we can be of more help.  Finding the right treatment plan can take a while, so be patient and work with your doctor.

God bless.

If you are seeing your primary care provider, you need to request a referral to a specialist.  Since allergies play a large role in your asthma, you need an allergist.  The first step in gaining control of asthma is to controll triggers.  You really need to get your allergies under control to do that.  You may need allergy shots.

I believe that treatment by an allergist will help you immensely.

No, your asthma is not controlled. My doctor considers asthma controlled when I need to use my rescue inhaler no more than two times in a week.

You probably need to be another controller medication (Singulair can help control asthma but it obviously isn't in your case). I do not understand why you cannot see your doctor for another 7 weeks? Uncontrolled asthma is a life threatening condition...you need to see your health care provider ASAP

Hi, do you have a preventative puffer? I find when i am finding my asthma due to allergies playing up it helps to use my symbicort puffer as well. You need to use the puffer daily as well until you see your dr. You can use more than 4x a day if you have too. Hope this helps
