I have been on the plaquenil for 6 months and am even still seeing improvements. A lot of my brain fog and fatigue is relieved (mind you I had severe iron deficiency anemia that I've also been treating with iron), I have less flares and less pain, and am seeing big improvements in my energy. I am the type of person who gets effects from many meds but with plaquenil I had a little bit of nausea in the beginning and some vivid dreams. That has all leveled out and no other side effects for me.
The frustration of waiting on a proper diagnosis is very upsetting. I am getting some bowel involvement and with the anemia issues my rheumy is refusing to do anything more or give me final diagnosis until I have a GI work up and determine the cause of my anemia (although I'm pretty sure it is my very heavy periods). My GP has dropped the ball and makes me just want to scream!
SAME situation here..... the body pain & fatigue are debilitating; I take 100mg ultram 3x a day which barely takes the edge off, NuVigil has been a wonder for the fatigue - the fatigue is so bad that I can't drive often because I nod at the wheel (i nod just during conversation!), Lyrica in conjunction with the ultram made a big difference in pain as well. I was on Plaquenil for quite a while, but the rheum. stopped it since it reflected no difference in antibody titers. Sun sensitivity took on a new level this summer, developing sun poisoning with my 1st exposure to the sun!
It can be so frustrating when your levels fluctuate, because while trying to diagnose they are changing....so if you are initially being tested and tests are negative they will just rule out - until times goes on, symptoms get worse and FINALLY they test on just the right day where the levels are high.....it really can make you feel like you are losing your mind!!
Hi Alina, welcome to MedHelp.
I would like to ask you some questions.
Do you know what your ANA was when it was positive and did they run a pattern on it? Have they checked your thyroid?
Do your joints hurt, muscle hurt or feel weak?
When you say you feel like your body it allergic to itself, are you saying you feel itchy inside? Maybe tingly?
your welcome and keep us posted....
You are so right, hang in there... I will keep searching. thank you
Hi! I too am in the midst of fighting the battle. I have seem numerous doctors and will not stop until I get the answers that I need. Mine all started (approx) 2003 but really showed his face in April of this year. We know our bodies and we know when something is not right. All I can tell you is believe in yourself and keep seeking out answers. Good or bad it is better to know....take care!
Thank you for writing back, at this time I am on no med for anything but thyroid and effoxr xr but i have been to confused to go back to see the rumy. I feel like i should trust my doc but then again i am so scared due to my symptoms that i don't know what to do.what did the Plaquenil due for you and your symptoms? and are there any bad side effects? thanks and keep in touch... alina
I'm in a similar situation. I have all over body pain and fatigue. One time my ANA is positive and next time negative. Same with RF. Rheumy feels it is either RA or Lupus and is treating me with Plaquenil which is helping. It is looking more like Lupus with time as have the malar rash, mouth sores and sun sensitivity. Keep working with your doctor and getting tested. Try to get some sun just before your next test as it may help your ANA to show positive (only if it is meant to be - will not be false). Are you on any meds?
