I take Effexor XR, Celexa and Risperdal. When the p-doc added the Celexa I had mania for a week. I have been on this cocktail for a couple of months and only one other issue with mania but it only lasted 3-4 days and was not too severe.
I can tell you my depression is 100 times better with the additional anti- depressant. Best of luck to you and I hope you find success with the new cocktail.
ADs and BP disorder are always an interesting conundrum. I know that there have been extensive studies regarding a Zyprexa/Prozac combination for BP disorder. Those studies have shown to be effective. If you and your pdoc are thinking about going with Prozac, I would probably look into using it with Zyprexa.
The ADs can be hit or miss, especially with BP folks. I know that I (along with many BP friends) have had serious issues with all of the ADs. With Wellbutrin, I had a psychotic break that manifested itself in extreme, delusional paranoia. It wasn't pretty. With Celexa, I cycled much harder; it really wasn't until I ditched the Celexa completely that my moods stopped swinging dangerously. My moods still swing, but no where near as bad as they were with Celexa. Also, with the Celexa, my mood would swing towards bad mania, which is the worst part of the disorder for me.
On a secondary note, if you're dealing with bad depressive mood swings, look into Lamictal; it's great for BP depression
