A question

Hello.
I have a question about how to tell your parents that you have a high risk of having a certain disorder. Because I probably have Bi-polar disorder. Except I tried asking my mom if I had it or not. (because it runs on my biological father side) and she said she is more worried about my sister having it than me. She just believes I have depression (which runs on her side of the family)... But what she doesn't see is that she has it mixed around. My sister is the one with depression. And I probably have BPD.. so I fear that if i try to talk to them about it they will either think im just saying things to get attention or they may believe im a hypochondriac. Which is what my sister thought when I tried to talk to her about it.

How brave and thoughtful of you to consider this!  I am the parent of an adult child with bipolar disorder, and I can hardly tell you how grateful I would have been if my son had come to me with a doctor's diagnosis, and how much it would have helped the whole family.

As it is, we learned about it the day he was diagnosed, twelve years ago, after a violent episode, and since then, he has mostly been in denial, refusing treatment.  I can't help regretting how much we have all lost as a result.

Go to a doctor and get a diagnosis.  Then she can't argue with that and if she does tell her the doctor is a professional in this and she isn't so she has no room to talk.
