multiple mental health issues that are still being assessed for a 5 year old

by creativeone, Jan 23, 2008 12:40PM
Child is 5 years old. He is very angry, combatitive, possibly dealing with multiple personalities vs extremely over-active immagination with what seems to be "friends" controlling him, including harming himself and others at an early age. Dx of Mood D/O, NOS; PDD NOS and ODD. with attention deficits. Behavior modification techniques no longer seem as effective. Psychiatrist has him on 4 psychotropic medications and has to adjust them every few weeks because meds seem to be losing their effectiveness. I am wondering if hyperthyroidism may be an influence. He is preoccupied/obsessed with eating but is burning it off quickly. Riperdol is only fueling the need to eat.
Suggestions????????

The thyroid should have been checked first.  You should also have a MRI done to rule out anything structurally wrong with his brain.  Medications for a five year old should be an absolute last resort--those are powerful medications. I hope he gets better soon.

If he is hyperthyroid you need to have that taken care of NOW!!  Being hyper causes all kinds of horrible problems not only with the brain, but causes lots of damage to the body.  I had Graves' Disease which is an autoimmune hyperthyroid condition and it made me act like a horrid witch and made all my bipolar systems magnify intensely.  If he is hyperthyroid the worse it gets the worse his cognitve functions will be.

Get the thyroid under control and go from there.  It has to be dealt with first.
