I haven't taken any type of valproate, but have you tried this site? They usually do a good job of explaining side effects (and everything else about different meds) in an underdstandable way: http://www.crazymeds.us/valproate.html
If all else fails, have a good long chat with whomever is prescribing it about side effects, and discuss how the benefits outweigh the risks. Good luck!
all meds have side effects including aspirin. But i agree that BP meds can be more harmful but inevitable though. sodium valproate is known to cause ovary cist, thinning the hair and gain weight. But no one can argue with your pdoc as to why he chose this one. unless you are consulting a GP which is wrong
the British medical guide always choose one of 3: tegretol or dapakote (sodium valproate) or lithium these are the 3 most classical that went for years. I myself am on antipsychotics only. Many people object to this because of hazard of tardive dyskenia and neuroleptic syndromes etc.. but every medicine has its complications. Once you trust your pdoc go ahead, especially that you may find it the best for you. people differ in their responses to medicine.
good luck
