I was put on topamax again after about three years off of it. I have gained about seventy pounds in two years.  I am hoping that the topamax will help me take the weight off.  How much weight can I expect to lose in a month on this medication?   Also,  I stopped eating meat about a month and a half ago.  thanks for the help

  Wow,  After about two weeks of being on it I have now appetite whatsoever.  I have had to buy some slim fast with protien in it because I went four days without eating.  I definately can tell it is helping my mood.  I am not as angry or withdrawn.  I have always wanted to become a vegetarian and them I happened upon a documentary called "Earthlings".  It is narrated by Joaquim Pheonix".  He is the bad guy in the movie "Gladiator".  It is the best Doc.  I have ever seen...but very graphic.  It is a must see.  To tashi72, and anyone else who would like to talk, I have been on almost all bipolar meds, pleas feel free to email me at ***@****.  Thanks again for your help!

Is there any other bipolar medication that does not cause weight gain or tardive dyskensia? Seems like topamax (which didn't work for me at all in any capacity) and lamictal are it. And lamictal is tearing out my hair like a horror movie.

I went on Topamax several years ago, maybe five, after being on Neurontin and gaining about 25 pounds.  I went on the net and did some  research and found out about Topamax's side effect of weight loss and switched to it as a mood stabilizer.  I lost 60 pounds over probably three months.  It absolutely takes away all hunger.  I forget to eat.  I love this stuff.  It's a great mood stabilizer, too.  I used to get really furious and just lose it.  Now I can't even remember what that feels like.  They prescribe it to alcoholics for cravings and to smokers who want to quit.  They prescribe it to obese people just for its weight loss effect.  It works on the part of the brain that produces cravings.  The funny thing about it is if I miss a dose, my stomach will growl, which it never does if I'm taking my medicine.  Also, why did you stop eating meat?  Are you a vegetarian?  You will really need some protein if you start to lose weight. You definitely want to pay attention to what you eat and make sure that you're eating quality food and probably taking vitamins.  Good luck with the Topamax.  It will even things out for you, for sure.  If you have kids, they will really appreciate it!

I don't know how much you will lose but you will lose some weight. I was on it for a short period of time and did not eat for 3 days straight. I lost about 10 lbs and wasn't on it long.
