Hi!
Treating the cause will lower the ESR values. Any inflammatory procedure which causes fever or even in absence of fever can cause the ESR to rise. Simple viral fevers, bacterial infections, typhoid, etc can result in a higher ESR. Usually, in most diseases diagnosed on basis of a high ESR (tuberculosis, cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, infective endocarditis, etc), the ESR is above 50 or 75. An ESR of 36 is not abnormally high. This ESR would normally settle down once the temperature goes down. However, a repeat test can be done and if the levels rise then further investigations can be done. Since the child is small, his stool should be tested for worms. Worms in gut can also raise ESR.
Since I cannot examine your son and know other related conditions he could be having, nor is a detailed history possible on net, I have listed the various possibilities that should be looked into. Please consult your child's pediatrician regarding this. Take care!
